Job Purpose
To lead the development, implementation, and management of health and safety policies and procedures within the engineering and aerospace environment. The role ensures compliance with relevant legislation, promotes a positive safety culture, and minimises risks to employees, contractors, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures aligned with current legislation and best practise.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits across all operational areas to identify hazards and implement appropriate control measures.
- Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses, producing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to management and staff on health and safety matters, ensuring awareness and understanding across the organisation.
- Coordinate health and safety training programmes to ensure all personnel meet statutory requirements and internal standards.
- Monitor and report on health and safety performance using key performance indicators and suggest continuous improvements.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and contractors to ensure compliance and best practise standards.
- Ensure that emergency procedures and contingency plans are in place, regularly reviewed, and tested.
- Promote a proactive health and safety culture that encourages employee engagement and participation.
- Manage health and safety documentation, records, and licences to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
Required Qualifications
- NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent recognised qualification.
- Valid First Aid certification is desirable.
Education
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
Experience
- Proven experience in a health and safety managerial role within the engineering or aerospace sectors.
- Demonstrable experience of conducting risk assessments, safety audits, and accident investigations.
- Experience of working with regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
- Track record of successfully implementing health and safety management systems in compliance with ISO 45001 or similar standards.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of UK health and safety legislation and best practises.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing and engaging personnel at all levels.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively in a part-time capacity.
- Competence in producing clear, concise reports and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications and health and safety management software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Membership of a recognised professional body such as the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or the British Safety Council.
- Additional qualifications or training in environmental management or quality assurance.
