Staffline Recruitment are currently working in partnership with Causeway Coast and Glens Council recruiting for a Team Lead Refuse Driver based at their Ballymoney and Coleraine site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the daily/weekly completion of specific work schedules and driving of specified Council vehicles in connection with refuse collection services within any given area of the Borough.
  • Responsible for the safe, legal and efficient operation of specified vehicles to include adherence to the appropriate driving guidelines, legislation and appropriate codes of practice.
  • Ensure that the department complies with all statutory and legislative requirements by adhering to these requirements and working in accordance with good governance and health and safety requirements.
  • Carry out daily checks on specified vehicles before leaving the depot and completing a daily defect report including using in-cab devices and return of electronic documentation to supervisors as instructed.
  • Drive the assigned vehicle in an efficient manner providing a customer focused service including the use of electronic in cab management systems, digital tachographs and other technologies if required in compliance with the transport regulations and driver hours.
  • Supervise the refuse collection team, or non-regular crew members, on daily rounds by giving instruction, assistance, support and training within your remit in performance of duties with emphasis on Health and Safety.
  • Provide familiarisation training, support and guidance on the use of plant and vehicle equipment, use of systems to team members as and when required.
  • Keep up to date with changes in services and communicate information to the team, service changes that will assist with operations and the use of electronic hardware/software, new material accepted in bin, new In Cab digital update, education campaigns and In Cab digital analytics reporting.
  • Ensure each day that the vehicle has fuel, oil and water as required and that all tyres are at correct pressures and are safe for the road, checking that all auxiliary equipment is operational prior to leaving the depot.
  • Complete and maintain collection schedules or a daily logbook, detailing all non-collections, lost or damaged bins and any other problems/incidents encountered on the collection rounds or sweeping schedules, returning schedules to the supervisor daily.
  • Ensuring the safety of the vehicle, council employees and the general public by carrying out dynamic risk assessments to ensure safe methods of working on an ongoing basis, particularly during periods of severe weather.
  • Be responsible for adherence to the reporting procedure in relation to vehicle accidents/breakdowns and reporting same to the Operations Supervisor including damage to the vehicle, third party vehicles or property.
  • Assist the Operations Supervisor including completion of any relevant documentation such as accident forms, insurance report forms, route work schedules or route risk assessments as necessary.
  • Inspect, collect, empty and return all containers in a safe and careful manner.
  • Ensuring all refuse is deposited at the Councils landfill site or waste transfer station, and that the vehicle is empty when returned to the depot each evening and washed if applicable.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of any vehicle including the use of mechanical aids where necessary, in a safe manner as per training.
  • Keep the vehicle and cab clean both internally and externally by undertaking daily cleaning of the vehicle paintwork, chassis and hopper.
  • Comply with Road Traffic Act and all relevant driving regulations, ensuring that all depot regulations in relation to vehicle management are adhered to speed limits, parking and refuelling etc.
  • Be responsible for continually reviewing daily route data and provide feedback in real time to supervision and administration staff for effective use of electronic In-cab systems to include exceptions, bin contamination/hotspots, broken bins, blocked roads etc. in terms of priority.
  • Carry out non-driving duties to include litter picking, emptying litter/dog foul bins, general cleansing, street cleansing (manual/mechanical sweeper/pedestrian sweeper), bin loading, back door collection, inspection of bin contents and recycling bins for contamination, and collection and distribution of bags.
  • Carry out duties at councils various recycling centres to include advising members of the public in relation to the segregation of waste, completing associated paperwork, keeping site tidy, assisting the general public with bulky or heavy items, opening and closing the site and office, static compactor duties and any other duties deemed necessary to ensure safe and efficient operation of recycling centres.
  • Engage with the public in the delivery of services providing guidance and assistance where required in a co-operative and courteous manner and at all times being aware of their needs.
  • As Team Lead of the refuse crew, provide advice and improvements through education to the general public including but not exclusive to leaflet drops, distributing promotional material, recycling bags, thorough bin checks etc. attachment of bin stickers and survey work etc. and to advise the public on recycling issues.
  • Refer queries from members of the public to the Operations Supervisor.
  • Adhere to work practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development activities and respond positively to new and alternative systems.
  • Comply with health and safety in accordance with Council Policies and legal requirements and wear all items of personal protective clothing as issued.
  • To carry out any other duties and responsibilities with the operations department commensurate with the grading and level of responsibilities of the post.

Criteria:

  • A full, current LGV driving licence Category C or C+E which enables you to drive in the UK.
  • A full current Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification.
  • Demonstrate on the application form, by providing personal and specific examples: a minimum of one year's experience in driving a Refuse Collection Vehicle. OR a minimum of two years' experience driving a Category C or CE vehicle in a commercial or public sector environment.
  • Demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples, a minimum of 2 years' experience to include: (a) Dealing directly with members of the public, in person (b) Previous experience of keeping simple records (c) Previous experience instructing staff.
