Role Overview: Reporting to the Shift Production Manager, the VMI Technician will be based at Norwich Crown Point Depot, carrying out critical maintenance and repair activities on rolling stock. The role focuses on preventative maintenance, fault finding and component replacement across mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, using diagnostic tools and software. You’ll play a key part in ensuring fleet reliability and safety, supporting investigations, completing post-repair testing, and working collaboratively to meet operational KPIs and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver preventative maintenance, repairs, and component replacement across mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems on rolling stock.
- Use diagnostic tools and software to identify faults and carry out effective repairs and post‑maintenance testing.
- Perform functional testing and system checks to ensure trains are safe, compliant, and fit for service.
- Diagnose and resolve defects, including supporting investigations into faults, incidents, and reliability issues.
- Maintain accurate work records and documentation using digital maintenance systems and mobile devices.
- Work collaboratively with the team to plan, prioritise, and deliver maintenance activities in line with operational KPIs.
- Provide technical support and second checks on completed work to ensure high standards (four‑eyes principle).
- Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards at all times.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, team activities, and wider projects across the depot and network.
Experience:
- Strong hands‑on engineering experience, ideally within rolling stock or a similar heavy engineering environment.
- Confident in fault finding, maintenance and repair activities across complex systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical and pneumatic schematics.
- Experience using diagnostic software and tools to identify faults and carry out effective repairs.
- Comfortable working in a fast‑paced operational environment, meeting deadlines and making decisions under pressure.
- A collaborative team player, able to support colleagues and contribute to shared goals.
- Strong focus on quality, safety and attention to detail.
- Holds a relevant engineering qualification or apprenticeship (or equivalent experience).
- Committed to continuous professional development and ongoing technical training.

- Completed a recognised apprenticeship (City & Guilds / BTEC or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
- Typically educated to NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent standard/experience).
- Strong technical knowledge across mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.
- Competent in using diagnostic software and digital maintenance systems.
- Ability to undertake testing, measurements and post‑repair validation.
- Good understanding of health & safety regulations and safe systems of work.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly and support colleagues where required.
- Willingness and capability to complete specialist training (e.g. high voltage, safety systems, technical specialisms).
- IT literate, with the ability to use tablets, mobile devices and maintenance systems for recording work activities.
