Role Overview: Based at the Liverpool Kirkdale Depot, this role reports into the Deputy Head of Production. This role supports the Head of Production by leading technical teams to deliver safe, reliable, and compliant rolling stock maintenance. Key duties include allocating work, conducting inspections, ensuring documentation accuracy, and managing quality standards. The position involves overseeing competence management, supporting people processes, and maintaining safety accountabilities. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and adherence to health and safety standards are essential, alongside fostering collaboration and acting as facility entry liaison for site access control.

Main Goals:

  • Management of performance regime to ensure targets are achieved.
  • Support the development and implementation of standards and procedures in accordance with legal, legislative and moral obligations of Stadler.
  • Oversee reporting for example on safety failures and incidents and various management reports.
  • Responsible for adhering to safety/quality systems and supporting the implementation of this.
  • Foster a zero‑harm culture within the production function by prioritising the safety of both people and products at all levels.
  • Initiate, and where authorised, implement actions to prevent the occurrence of product non‑conformities, rail safety issues, HSQ&E incidents, and deficiencies in processes or systems.
  • Annual identification and quantification of risks in order to complete the risk register.
  • Demonstrate values‑based behaviour.
  • Effectively deputise for the Head of Production on a short to medium‑term basis.

Personnel: Support the Head of Production by leading and coordinating teams of technical staff (e.g. technicians, fitters and assistants) to deliver work on rolling stock. Ensure all such activities are carried out with due regard to safety standards and performance targets. Deliver on the job quality inspections, reporting procedures and liaison with necessary stakeholders. Ensure that trains which go into service are safe, reliable and compliant with company procedures (e.g. VMI, VOI). Allocation of work to staff in accordance with maintenance plans (including work arising and enhanced work as required). Carry out appropriate inspections/checks as required or directed, including completion of ‘in process evaluations’, ‘end of product checks’ and general condition assessment, to ensure that work is done safely and to specification, to ensure a reliable and safe product. Ensure all documentation (e.g. job cards, defects logs, component labels, work orders and failure reports) associated with fleet maintenance and overhaul activities are completed. Support the Head of Production as required in the application of people management arrangements, including first level requirements of discipline, sickness and attendance monitoring procedures. Ensure that staff undertaking work is competent to do so, in accordance with the competence management regime. Also, support of staff to develop and maintain competence. Management of key safety accountabilities. Demonstrate ability to act appropriately as facility entry gate liaison person, controlling the access and egress of persons onto the site through the main entrance.

What are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Electrical & Mechanical time served (or equivalent) with suitable level of shop floor experience.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must have or willing to become a statutory First Aid at Work person.
  • Good level of IT skill including Microsoft packages.
  • Experience of line/people management.
  • Fire safety experience.
  • Health and safety experience.
  • Fleet maintenance and fault‑finding.
  • Accident reporting and investigation.
  • Competency in Rules and Regulations Category C, including local depot instructions.
  • PTS competency.
  • Designated Person competency.
  • Nominated Person competency.
  • Traction and Rolling Stock Maintenance Standards.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of rolling stock units.
  • Management experience / supervisor experience.
  • Understand circuit diagrams.
  • Work as part of a management team.
  • Experience of continuous improvement.
  • Project Management.
  • Proven experience in the introduction of new trains and warranty management.
  • Proven extensive experience in a large engineering environment with a focus on production, through‑life support.
  • Knowledge of maintenance activities with a large multi‑disciplined transport fleet.
  • Experience in an operational transport and production environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in advanced Lean, Kaizen and 6S and other modern production techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience in conducting and leading complex root cause investigations.
  • Strong knowledge experience and understanding of risk and safety in the workplace, within a transport environment and from a production perspective.
  • Experience in managing a department, team and facility in a production / project setting.
  • Clear understanding of the principles of production techniques and process’ and the interaction between the functions across the business.
  • Proven experience of identifying, assessing and mitigating all manner of risks and documenting risk registers to demonstrate compliance and become the basis of safe systems of work.
  • Formal education at least to HNC or equivalent standard in an appropriate subject matter.
