Responsible to: ExamsManager

Hours of work: January trialexams and external exams May - July with additional dates for practical examsand training sessions. As and when required. Full or half day sessionsavailable.

Rate of Pay: Β£13.45 per hour (Β£15.40 perhour with holiday pay)

Overall purpose of the post

  • To conductexaminations in accordance with the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ),awarding body and St Peter's School, York regulations and instructions.
  • To have akey role in upholding the integrity and security of the externalexamination/assessment process.
  • To ensurethat examinations are conducted according to the regulations to:
    • ensure all candidates have an equal opportunityto demonstrate their abilities
    • ensure the security of examination materialsbefore, during and after the examination
    • prevent possible candidate malpractice
    • prevent possible administrative failures

GeneralRequirements

  • Experienceof invigilation is not required as training in the role and duties of aninvigilator will be provided
  • Invigilators are required to:
    • Declare ifthey have invigilated previously and whether they have any current maladministration/malpractice sanctionsapplied to them
    • Confirm their availability in advance of main examination periods
  • Invigilators must confirm the confidentiality and security requirementssurrounding the invigilation process are known, understood and will be followedat all times

  • Bereliable, flexible and readily available during main examination periods
  • Haveeffective communication skills and good interpersonal skills
  • Work wellas part of a team
  • Beconfident and a reassuring presence to candidates in examination rooms
  • Be able togive instructions and manage situations involving different groups of people
  • Have basicIT skills (familiar with use of email, mobile phone messaging etc.)
  • Seek toachieve competence in the role and a rigorous understanding of the JCQregulations

Main duties

  • To conductexaminations in accordance with the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ),awarding body and St Peter's School regulations and instructions.
  • To have akey role in upholding the integrity and security of the externalexamination/assessment process.

Before examinations

  • Report toand be briefed by the exams officer prior to each exam session
  • Keepconfidential exam question papers and materials secure before, during and afterexams
  • Ensure examrooms are set up according to the requirements
  • Admitcandidates into exam rooms under formal examination conditions
  • Give fullattention to conducting the examinations properly
  • Identifycandidates and seat candidates according to the required arrangements
  • Distributethe correct question papers and exam materials to candidates
  • Instructcandidates in the conduct of their exams
  • Deal withcandidate questions
  • Start exams

Duringexaminations

  • Superviseand observe candidates at all times and be vigilant throughout examinations
  • Keepdisruption in examination rooms to a minimum
  • Deal withemergencies or irregularities effectively
  • Record/report any incidents, disruption or irregularities
  • Completeattendance registers
  • Deal withcandidate questions according to the regulations
  • Afterexaminations
  • Instructcandidates in finishing their examinations and collect examination scripts andmaterials
  • Dismisscandidates from the examination room
  • Checkcandidates' names on scripts, match the details on the attendance register
  • Securelyreturn all examination scripts and materials to the exams manager
  • Other tasks
  • Undertaketraining, update and review sessions as required
  • (prior toinvigilating any external examination in a new academic year) Undertakerelevant online invigilator training and assessment for that academic year
  • Undertake,where required and where able, other duties requested by the exams manager, forexample:
    • centresupervision of examination timetable clash candidates between examinationsessions
    • facilitatingaccess arrangements for candidates, for example as a reader, scribe etc. (full training will be provided)
