The Safety Checks Operative supports the University’s commitment to maintaining a safe, legally compliant, and supportive environment for staff, students, visitors, and contractors. Operating on a schedule of 3 days per week, this role focuses on prioritised checks, compliance monitoring, and proactive risk management across campus facilities. The initial prime role is to undertake planned fire door checks and other fire safety–related equipment checks across the University estate, ensuring compliance with current fire safety legislation, British Standards, and internal University policies.
Responsibilities
- Scheduled Health & Safety Checks
- Conduct priority-based checks of teaching spaces, halls of residences, sports facilities, and communal areas.
- Identify defects, hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Record findings accurately; use application on handheld device to record checks.
- Undertake scheduled checks including functional checks of fire extinguishers, evacuation chairs, refuge points, and other safety equipment.
- Maintain records accurately.
- Review findings, recommend appropriate actions and monitor follow-up actions.
- Work closely with Estates & Facilities, H&S Officer and contractors.
- Report to the Maintenance Manager.
- Assist in fire drills and training sessions.
- Support campus wide safety awareness initiatives.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties required by the university.
Qualifications
- Experience in H&S checks/inspections.
- Working Knowledge of UK fire safety legislation.
- Experience in Record keeping.
- Certification in fire door inspection. If not, must successfully complete a suitable accredited course during induction.
- Experience in higher education or similar environments.
- Communication & interpersonal skills: able to convey technical information clearly and confidently.
- Attention to detail & accuracy: demonstrates meticulous inspection standards and high-quality record keeping.
- Planning, Organisation & Time Management: able to manage workload independently and meet deadlines.
- Provides a professional and responsive service to all building users.
- Teamwork & Collaboration: works effectively with Estates, Health & Safety, and contractors.
- Must be self‑motivated and work towards targets.
