Two posts in Paediatric Emergency Medicine with an interest in either Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) or Paediatric Major trauma, for 12 months starting September 2026. St Mary’s Hospital is a busy Major Trauma Centre in London, with a range of paediatric medical and surgical specialities, including PID, Haematology, Neurology, Allergy, Renal and PICU. It is one of the key trusts in the North London Paediatric Specialist Network, and works closely with West London Children’s Hospital. It has an internationally respected academic and research unit, and active recruitment to several current or recent important research projects.
We are looking for experienced doctors who have completed at least 3 years post-Foundation training in either paediatrics or Emergency Medicine (with at least 6 months in paediatrics if EM trained). Successful candidates will be able to show a real interest in Paediatric EM, and show how these posts will further their training and career. They are suitable for those looking for Out of Program experience (OOP), working alongside RCPCH Grid trainees in PEM.
Main duties of the job include:
- Assessing and managing the wide range of presentations of illness and injury in children and young people.
- Supporting more junior resident doctors (along with the consultants).
- Helping the wider MDT team provide effective and quality care to children and their families.
- Undertaking projects, gaining expertise and assisting in training and governance of the chosen area of interest (POCUS / Major Trauma).
Key areas of responsibilities:
- Providing initial assessment and treatment of children brought to the Emergency Department.
- Supporting the nursing and medical team within the department, and providing supervision and support for less experienced trainees.
- Honing experience in the resuscitation of critically unwell children, and gaining experience in major trauma in children and young people.
- Completing quality improvement projects to improve the care the department can provide for its patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities include:
- Providing safe and effective clinical care to children in the department, under the supervision of the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant.
- Helping provide ongoing care for children on the paediatric CDU.
- Assisting with the resuscitation and stabilisation of significantly injured or sick children.
- Performing procedures including minor orthopaedic procedures, suturing etc.
- Ensuring good safety netting and signposting on discharge, and ensuring the safety of children on discharge from the department.
- Providing good communication with nursing staff and colleagues, and working cohesively as part of the team.
- Supporting and learning from colleagues with differing clinical backgrounds.
- Liaising effectively with colleagues from different specialties, and with HCP in the community (GP, midwife, school nurses etc).
- Effectively using the computerised system for patient records, ordering, results and communication (discharge letters).
- Ensuring all safeguarding concerns are addressed and communicated.
- Developing and honing skills in working in an Emergency Department – prioritisation, safety, flow and efficient working.
Person specification includes:
- Education / qualifications
- Essential criteria: GMC registration and licence to practice. MB ChB or equivalent. Membership of Royal College exams (e.g. MRCPCH, MRCEM, MRCP, MRCS etc).
- Desirable criteria: Higher Degree (MSc etc). Higher training qualifications (FCEM, diploma etc).
- Essential criteria: Ability to speak and write English to IELTS level 7 or above (IELTS completed if required).
- Essential criteria: 3 years’ experience post-Foundation Training (ie ST5+) in either paediatrics or emergency medicine. 1 year previous experience as a middle grade in the UK / NHS.
- Desirable criteria: Experience in critical care (ITU / Anaesthetics / PICU). Other related experience (trauma / surgery).
- Essential criteria: Advanced resuscitation skills (e.g. APLS / EPLS).
- Desirable criteria: Advanced Trauma skills (e.g. ATLS / ETC).
- Essential criteria: Evidence of participation in Quality Improvement projects.
- Desirable criteria: Completion of QI project / audit cycle. Publication in peer review journal.
