Reports to: Deputy Headteacher
Job Purpose: The Pastoral Manager will provide operational leadership of pastoral systems within an allocated year group(s) or phase, supporting high standards of behaviour, attendance, safeguarding and student wellbeing. The postholder will be visibly present and operationally available throughout the school day to respond to pastoral issues, support behaviour systems and ensure that students are able to engage positively in learning. Working closely with senior leaders, teaching staff and external agencies, the Pastoral Manager will co‑ordinate targeted interventions, manage complex student casework and address barriers to learning swiftly and effectively. The role will play a key part in promoting a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment where all students are supported to achieve their potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Behaviour and Student Conduct
- Provide a visible and proactive pastoral presence across designated year groups throughout the school day, responding promptly to behaviour incidents and supporting the consistent implementation of behaviour systems.
- Monitor behaviour patterns within the year group and contribute to strategic planning to reduce suspensions and improve engagement.
- Co‑ordinate follow‑up interventions for students at risk of suspension or disengagement, including restorative work and behaviour support planning.
- Lead reintegration planning following suspension, managed moves or periods of absence from school.
- Work constructively with parents and carers to address behavioural concerns and resolve conflict where appropriate.
- Administer first aid.
- Safeguarding and Student Welfare
- Act as a key operational contact for safeguarding concerns, ensuring that issues are recorded accurately and escalated appropriately in line with safeguarding procedures.
- Maintain a secure working knowledge of safeguarding thresholds, including early help, child in need and child protection processes.
- Contribute to safeguarding plans, chronologies and multi‑agency meetings as directed by the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Support vulnerable students to improve engagement, emotional wellbeing and readiness to learn.
- Attendance
- Maintain a clear overview of attendance within the designated year groups, promoting continual improvement and supporting high levels of achievement.
- Complete first‑day response calls, as required, to establish reasons for absence and provide appropriate support or challenge to facilitate the swift return of pupils.
- Initiate appropriate support and referrals for families in relation to attendance concerns, including completion of referral documentation and attendance meetings with parents or carers.
- Undertake home visits, where appropriate, at the direction of the senior leader responsible for attendance or the Headteacher.
- Complete relevant calls, correspondence and parental meetings in line with the school’s escalation processes and graduated attendance approach, including the development and monitoring of attendance action plans and accurate recording on school systems.
- Liaise with members of the attendance team to identify cohorts within the year group requiring targeted intervention, using attendance data and tracking systems.
- Implement and monitor targeted actions to improve attendance outcomes for individual pupils.
- Ensure that daily statutory registers for the year group are accurate and compliant with Department for Education guidance and safeguarding requirements.
- Contribute to and attend relevant in‑school multi‑disciplinary meetings and meetings with external agencies where attendance is a concern.
- Identify and support pupils whose attendance is affected by emotional, mental health or medical needs, working collaboratively with parents and relevant professionals.
- Meet with identified pupils and families during parent evenings to address attendance concerns and support improvement planning.
- Work collaboratively with attendance leaders to promote attendance initiatives, including rewards, targeted interventions, assemblies, communications and administrative processes linked to attendance improvement.
- Support transition arrangements at key points in the academic year to promote strong attendance and engagement.
- Promote and improve punctuality through systematic monitoring of lateness data and consistent application of school procedures, including timely communication with parents and early intervention where patterns of lateness emerge.
- Targeted Intervention and SEND Pastoral Support
- Work closely with the SEND team to support students whose pastoral needs impact on behaviour, attendance or engagement.
- Co‑ordinate targeted intervention plans for students with complex or overlapping needs.
- Support transition and reintegration arrangements for students accessing alternative provision or specialist support.
- Data, Monitoring and Accountability
- Use attendance and behaviour data to identify trends, prioritise intervention and evaluate the impact of pastoral strategies.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date casework records to support safeguarding, accountability and reporting.
- Contribute to pastoral reporting cycles and provide analysis to senior leaders as required.
- Leadership of Pastoral Culture and Assemblies
- Plan and deliver assemblies that promote positive behaviour, attendance, personal development and the Academy’s values.
- Support the development of a positive year group identity and promote high expectations for conduct, engagement and achievement.
- Partnership and Multi‑Agency Working
- Liaise effectively with external agencies including social care, youth services, health professionals and alternative provision partners.
- Support parental engagement strategies to improve student outcomes and strengthen home‑school relationships.
