We know that clear, two-way communication is essential to performance, trust and belonging - and it’s a key area colleagues and volunteers have told us to improve. This Community of Practice helps us improve reach and engagement by translating national messages into local contexts - supporting a stronger shared voice, and helping people feel informed, involved and connected.
This role exists to help ensure that important communications don’t just get published - they reach, resonate and make sense locally. By strengthening the link between national communications and local networks, Community of Practice Officers play a vital role in improving understanding, engagement and connection across St John.
As a Community of Practice Officer, you will play a crucial role within a national community of practice. You will support the Community of Practice Lead to provide coordination, insight and impact of communications with volunteers, ensuring that efforts within the community across the country align with national standards and priorities while avoiding duplication of efforts.
As an Internal Communications & Engagement Community of Practice Officer, you will:
- Act as a local communications champion within your region or area;
- Help share and amplify key national messages, surface local stories and insight;
- Provide practical feedback on what’s landing (and what’s not) with volunteers and colleagues on the ground;
- Work as part of a national network of Officers, supporting the Community of Practice Lead and the central Internal Communications & Engagement team.
A core part of the role is helping national communications travel further by enabling members to cascade and amplify key messages across their own local networks.
To succeed in this role, you will be expected to attend regular meetings with your Internal Communication & Engagement Community of Practice Lead and other Internal Communication & Engagement Community of Practice Officers, as well as liaising with the Internal Communications Team. Connection with Community Projects Officers and Network Leads will also be a key part of the role to enable the two-way communication needed for effective internal communications. There will also be opportunities to meet with other Community of Practice Officers, Community of Practice Leads and St John people.
The majority of the role can be undertaken virtually from anywhere in the UK, but there may be a need to attend occasional in person meetings that may be held in London, Birmingham, Manchester or other St John locations across England.
This role requires the completion of the 9 mandatory online training courses for all St John people. Any additional training necessary for the role will be discussed with the successful applicant by the National People and Culture Advisor (the line manager for this role) following appointment to the role.
