The role: As a Technical Consultant you will be a key part of the St. James’s Place infrastructure team. The role is responsible for ensuring that our infrastructure and in-scope platforms and associated tooling are operating effectively and maintained in accordance with our IT standards and policies to ensure high availability to our community. Advanced level of problem solving is expected with guidance to other technical resources on complex issues. It also involves working on major initiatives resulting in defining and changing infrastructure architecture as well as improving operational efficiencies.
What you’ll be doing
You will work closely with our engineering teams, internal stakeholders including application solution architects, project managers and development teams in ensuring a quality end-to-end technical design is delivered to the business. You will ensure you’re within scope, contribute to evolving our architectural roadmaps and strategy, and work with external and internal stakeholders to deliver successful projects.
As a senior stakeholder working with our 3rd parties, you’ll design, build IT infrastructure solutions to support our internal staff, Partner community and clients. We are a cloud-first organisation and extensively use SaaS, IaaS, PaaS solutions. You’ll keep abreast of key developments that could impact our systems, and exploit changes in tools and technologies to improve services. This role is likely to specialise in a particular technology to the expert level but is expected to have a basic understanding across multiple technologies used.
Key Responsibilities of the Job
- Ensure infrastructure, platforms and environments are maintained in line with our standards, resolving incidents to minimise impact and achieve target SLAs.
- Keep knowledge up to date of changes made by suppliers in software or tooling, providing recommendations for future change.
- Maintain up-to-date business continuity plans and support system disaster recovery tests.
- Design and provide infrastructure architectural direction, guidance and oversight for changes across our estate.
- Act as a consultant for technology areas for complex problems and incidents.
- Train, educate and mentor others within the Technology Operations division.
- Drive and maintain a technical roadmap to ensure the estate is fully supported.
- Proactively recommend estate right-sizing and new technology adoption.
- Understand and maximise new product, system and cloud features.
- Align infrastructure designs with business drivers and capabilities.
- Integrate security into all architectural solutions.
- Maintain knowledge of AWS Well-Architected Framework and Microsoft technologies.
- Identify automation opportunities and deliver automated functions.
- Serve as subject-matter expert across multiple areas of Technology Operations.
- Collaborate with internal and 3rd-party architects on complex projects.
- Stay informed on technology trends and apply them to business and operating models.
- Consult with development projects to align infrastructure and architecture.
- Understand core cloud infrastructure across AWS, Azure and data centre environments.
- Familiarity with software tools that automate or assist development builds.
- Hold enterprise product certifications, especially AWS Professional and Snowflake experience.
- Possess extensive knowledge of Cloud technologies across IaaS, SaaS and PaaS.
- Understand project life-cycle and application development methodologies.
- Experience in a DevOps environment and application integration approaches.
- Experience working across infrastructure in complex financial services environments.
