An exciting role in a unique place…

St Ives is a unique place. 200,000 visitors each year enjoy the visually stunning beaches and coastline and an internationally renowned arts and culture heritage.

But at its heart is a local community of 11,000 people with their roots in fishing and mining and rich in tradition, with a charter reaching back to 1639.

The Town Council celebrates the area’s history and culture but is also ambitious for the future and for St Ives to be a place where our local communities thrive.

This is an exciting time for the Council, which has grown to take services as diverse as CCTV, town library, parks, gardens, left luggage, weddings and a concert venue into local ownership. 30 staff and 16 councillors work to manage services across three sites.

The role

The new role of Deputy Town Clerk will support the Council’s continued development. The post is part of a senior management team and support the Town Clerk on policy and strategy development. They will work in close collaboration with councillors and ensure that the cycle of committees and meetings is clerked and managed effectively. They will lead the support services team and also play a role in overseeing community development and project work.

About you

We are looking for someone with a special blend of skills. Passionate about working for the community and with a sound understanding of local authority organisation and management. Ideally you will have a track record in the local council sector and holding, or be working towards, a CiLCA qualification.

The role will be busy and you will be comfortable working at pace with a varied and challenging inbox.

You are a strong communicator, confident in public meetings and working at a strategic level. You work collaboratively, are skilled at creating connections between sectors and communities. You are unphased by new challenges and in finding innovative solutions to complex local challenges.
