Principal Economist, Economic Decision Science £40k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement.

Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and remain dependent on UK government aid.

Overview

Providing economic policy analysis and advice, this role is flexible, but depending on your skillset, will cover some of the following fields:

  • Tax policy and tax analysis
  • Cost benefit analysis of spending decisions
  • Financial services
  • Microeconomic policy reforms such as economic regulation of specific sectors

This varied role is an opportunity to utilise a wide range of quantitative and technical economic abilities, while demonstrating strong general policy development skills. The ability to apply sound and proven economic frameworks to the island’s specific circumstances will be critical to your success as you liaise independently across all levels of government, the community and the private sector.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, social science, or a related field
  • Sound quantitative and written communication skills, plus verbal and presentation skills that include the ability to explain complex ideas and engage people
  • Ability to define and use analytics to support decision-making
  • Professional judgement confidence in using ICT systems and ability to plan, manage and review tasks
  • Strong interpersonal skills including motivating, negotiating, influencing and relationship building
  • Excellent time management, planning and organisation
  • Creative, ability to identify improvements and anticipate and respond to change
  • Proficiency at assessing problems and determining appropriate action
  • Approachable and confident in developing team members
  • Demonstrate core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork, and use diverse expertise and experiences to ensure best benefit to St Helena
  • Familiar with workforce, community and capacity development as an officer funded through the Technical Co‑Operation Programme
