£75k-£80k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement. Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.
Leading four veterinary staff covering domestic animals, livestock and poultry service provision, you will undertake regulatory aspects of animal imports and exports and veterinary biosecurity, advising government, private sector and public on animal health, disease and welfare. You will oversee clinical practices and run the small animal surgery, managing the procurement, issuing and stock control of veterinary medicines.
Other responsibilities include:
- The surveillance and monitoring of the disease status of the Island’s livestock and domestic animals.
- The implementation and monitoring of the Environmental Natural Resources and Planning Portfolio’s (ENRP) Animal and Apiculture Import and Export Health Standards (protocols).
- Boarding vessels and attending the airport when animals are arriving and leaving the Island.
- Overseeing the ENRP quarantine facilities.
- Representing ENRP as a member of the Island’s Health Protection Board.
- Monitoring the world animal disease situation.
Professionally qualified with a degree in veterinary medicine and surgery, you have commensurate post-graduate experience. Knowledge of livestock production systems will be essential to maximise opportunities to improve meat production on St Helena, with experience of AI application procedures for livestock, or a willingness to undertake such training.
Able to mentor and delegate, you are computer literate with strong communication, negotiation and diplomacy skills. An understanding of agricultural and animal legislation is required plus the ability to communicate with laymen, para-professionals, pet owners, Government officials, politicians and the media.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
