The HCA/clinic assistant role is essential to the smooth running of the Spasticity Service. The post-holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and have responsibility for providing a high quality administrative and clinical service to the Spasticity Service. They will ensure a smooth and efficient service for both the multi-disciplinary team and patients, in order to deliver a positive patient experience.
They will provide patients with a primary point of contact between the multi-disciplinary team and their colleagues, patients, relatives, and GPs, providing relevant information and assisting with queries. They will coordinate care associated with patient pathways, including bookings and solving queries that arise. They also are responsible for offering clinical support to the members of the multi-disciplinary team including preparation of patients for intervention therapy and assisting with procedures. This might include help with toileting, hoisting, undressing/dressing and handling patients during procedures such as botulinum toxin injections.
Responsibilities:
- Be the first point of contact for patients, families, and GPs.
- Coordinate appointments and patient care pathways.
- Monitor stock, prepare equipment and clinic rooms.
- Assist with procedures, including patient preparation (e.g. toileting, undressing) and support during interventions such as botulinum toxin injections.
- Keep the service running smoothly with top-notch admin support.
- Assist the clinical team with the delivery of complex procedures such as botulinum toxin injections, nerve blocks and intrathecal baclofen (ITB) refills.
- Assist with positioning of the patient during procedures, supporting other clinicians in handling and positioning limbs in preparation for injections or intrathecal baclofen (ITB) refills.
- Assist with the moving and handling of patients and loads using the correct moving and handling aids and techniques in accordance with local guidelines and risk assessments.
- Communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately with the multi-disciplinary team, patients and their families, visitors or carers, and other clinicians involved in patient care.
- Manage and answer telephone calls related to the service in a courteous and prompt manner.
- Provide patients with information about appointments or non-clinical advice and guidance regarding their care in a sensitive and timely manner and using language they understand.
- Resolve complex queries, using analysis, experience and judgement to determine when to pass the caller on to a member of the clinical team, or when to elevate the call to a senior colleague.
- Be aware of and adhere to the Trust's policy on standards for safe practice and support others to do so.
- Identify health emergencies and act accordingly.
- Report any incidents, accidents or problems to the staff member in charge.
