Overview
We are seeking an experienced senior staff nurse with a minimum of 2 years’ experience within an acute surgical setting. Experienced nurses with relevant experience and an interest in the specialty are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities
- Take on the Nurse in Charge role and deputise for the ward manager in their absence.
- Coordinate patients and staff daily and ensure high standards of care are maintained.
- Manage and support a designated team, conduct 1:1s and appraisals, and support roster management, quality audits, and incident investigation.
- Provide flexible cover for other wards when required and model proactive leadership to junior staff in a teaching hospital setting.
- Support the care of general surgery and bariatric patients, including early detection of deteriorating patients, specialist drain and stoma care, and complex pain and wound management.
Department context
Gray ward is a dynamic, high-acuity 32-bed general surgery ward within the General Surgery Department. The department provides acute services to St George’s Hospitals and the wider tertiary network, with a focus on upper GI and colorectal specialties. Care includes urology, trauma and orthopaedics, ENT and gynaecology, from A&E through discharge. The ward also cares for patients stepped down from ICU who have complex nursing needs and includes bariatric care and patients with complex nutritional needs including parenteral nutrition.
Requirements
- Band 6 senior staff nurse with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver life-saving care.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills; ability to work well within a team.
- Proactive about role modelling, supporting, and encouraging junior staff; able to lead and develop others.
