Work with and under the supervision of consultants and other clinicians in dentistry to provide oral health education, periodontal treatment, re‑assessment, and discharge patients back to their general dental practitioner after discussion with the consultant whose care the patient is under.
Provide care for specific patient groups, including head and neck oncology patients, patients on anti‑angiogenic medication, medically, physically, and mentally compromised patients, anxious children and adults with developmental disorders such as cleft lip and palate, patients post‑dental trauma, and patients who have undergone various oncological treatments including dental implant rehabilitation.
Responsibilities include:
- Work on oncology new‑patient clinics, providing prevention advice pre‑radiotherapy and pre‑anti‑angiogenic medication use.
- Manage the diary and liaise with the administrative team.
- Manage patient treatment pathways and liaise with consultants.
- Liaise with the Haematology department regarding any pre‑operative cover.
- Liaise with Clinical Nurse Specialists in various teams regarding patient welfare when necessary.
- Visit medical wards to provide limited treatment for particularly debilitated patients, such as post‑maxillectomy and post‑fracture patients.
- Provide treatment for referrals from consultants in Paediatrics, Orthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
- Continue to assess student dental hygienists in training, ensuring high standards and assisting with logging student records.
- Ensure cleanliness and day‑to‑day routine care of instruments, operating units, chairs, and associated surgery equipment; report any faults or damaged instruments.
- Maintain compliance with mandatory training and continued professional development.
- Respond promptly to referrals from GPs, community dentists, and other members of the wider medical team.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical records, adhering to good practice regarding patient confidentiality and consent.
- Audit the service to evaluate effectiveness of service provision and clinical outcomes.
- Participate in the Maxillo‑Facial Department’s clinical governance programme, including study/journal club.
- Involve with audit and research programmes as appropriate.
- Adapt flexibly to service changes and assist in implementing them.
- Work independently and provide high‑quality care to patients.
