Senior Clinical Fellow ENT Otology

This post is suitable for post CCT Specialist Registrars (or equivalent) seeking to specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of complex otological disease including implantation otology and lateral skull base surgery. The post offers supervised training in all aspects of surgical otology including cochlear implantation, implantation of bone conducting implants (BCI) and surgery for chronic ear disease and otosclerosis. The post also involves training in lateral skull base surgery including but not limited to the management of acoustic neuromas. This experience is in conjunction with the neuro-surgical department. Relevant post-operative management of these patients is an essential part of this post. The successful individual will participate in regular MDT meetings in both implantation otology and skull base surgery. These include radiological reviews of relevant imaging.

Main duties of the job include participation in a significant training programme for junior doctors who rotate through the Trust. St George's Hospital has developed links with most district general hospitals throughout the South Thames West. St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK's largest healthcare organisations and has integrated with Community Services Wandsworth. The Trust shares its main hospital site in south west London with St George's University of London, and is linked to Kingston Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences. St George's has an established national and international reputation as a leading hospital for specialist care including neurosciences, cardiac care, stroke and cancer. We also provide excellent local care to the residents of Wandsworth, and regional care as both an acute, hyper acute stroke unit and trauma centre.

The otolaryngology service has been successfully configured on the 'hub and spoke' model and has developed into a formal network. The Service is centered at St George's where complex surgery is carried out. Day surgery is performed at a number of partner hospitals - Kingston, Epsom, St Helier and the Mayday - fed through outpatient services at these hospitals. St George's also provides the emergency cover for these hospitals.

Job responsibilities include evidence of continuing medical education, commitment to organise education and training of junior doctors, therapy staff, nurses and medical students, willingness to participate in management activities, experience of research, and excellent communication skills.

Essential qualifications include full registration with the GMC and Fellowship of the Royal College or affiliated body. Desirable qualifications include higher additional qualification and possession of CCT.

Essential experience includes evidence of continuing medical education and commitment to organise education and training. Desirable experience includes other specific medical interests.

Essential teaching skills include commitment to organise education and training of junior doctors, therapy staff, nurses and medical students. Desirable skills include qualification in teaching or completion of a 'Teach the Trainers' course.

Essential management skills include willingness to participate in management activities and motivation to ensure achievement of defined targets. Desirable skills include experience of change management.

Essential research experience includes experience of research, particularly in collaboration with other clinicians. Desirable experience includes willingness to continue participation in research.

Essential disposition includes potential to cope with stressful situations, undertake responsibility and be a team player. Desirable disposition includes being enthusiastic and approachable.

Other essential skills include excellent communication skills, ability to travel between Trust sites, and commitment to personal and professional development. Desirable skills include experience in developing effective and collaborative working relationships.
