Job summary
The role involves acting as deputy section leader and the nominated RPA and MPE to a number of RPC’s external clients. The postholder will work with a high degree of autonomy to ensure that RPC’s service specification is delivered to its clients.
They will perform RPA/MPE audits to assess compliance with the regulatory framework and play an important role in the development of RPC’s scientific services. They will also play a role in the delivery of RPC’s training commitments to healthcare professionals (via scheduled and ad hoc training courses).
Main duties of the job
- Audit services with regard to their compliance with legislation relating to radiation and laser safety and advise on corrective actions arising.
- To act as deputy section leader.
- To support the Section leader in delivering RPC’s service commitments.
- To act as the nominated RPA and MPE to sites that are the responsibility of the post holder.
- Responsible for the investigation of radiation incidents and provision of radiation incident reports to clients. To ensure the accuracy of incident reports provided by other colleagues.
- To contribute to the development of RPC’s scientific and technical services.
- To contribute to the department’s scientific research and development activities.
- Provide advice on legislation and guidance in radiation protection to clients.

The Radiological Protection Centre (RPC) at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust acts as Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA), Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA), Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) to healthcare organisations around the UK.
It has about 16 staff and has been established as one of the leading providers in the sector since 1985. Job responsibilities
- Audit services with regard to their compliance with legislation relating to radiation and laser safety and advise on corrective actions as necessary.
- To act as deputy section leader.
- To personally act as RPA and MPE to sites that are the responsibility of the post holder.
- To contribute to the development of RPC’s services.
- To participate in scientific research and development.
- To provide radiation protection specifications for facilities using ionising radiation. To advise on the radiation safety aspects of the design and build of existing and new facilities for ionising radiations.
- To contribute to the organisation and delivery of the sections training courses.
- Provide advice on legislation and guidance in radiation protection to clients. The post holder is required to keep up-to-date with current legal requirements.
