Applications are invited to apply for a position as a locum consultant general anaesthetist. Main interests include cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.
Main duties of the job:
- The post holder will carry out their duties as a full-time Consultant Anaesthetist.
- The role will also offer the opportunity to deliver Anaesthetic sessions in a wider teaching hospital environment.
Job responsibilities:
- This is a full time post at 10 PAs with 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PAs for SPA in support of personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal and revalidation.
- There is potential to increase job planned hours to beyond 10 PAs, should this be desirable.
- Applicants should have the FRCA or an equivalent qualification and have suitable experience as described in the person specification in the job plan description.
- They should be on the GMC Specialist Register with a licence to practice.
- Experience of NHS working practices and systems is essential.

This is a great opportunity to join our award-winning anaesthetic department, which is a highly diverse and inclusive workforce of approx 100 consultants providing expertise in a wide variety of anaesthetic subspecialties including Paediatrics, Neurosurgery, Cardio-thoracics, Intensive Care, Acute and Chronic Pain relief and academic positions in SGUL.
There are over 60 trainees from St Georges School of Anaesthesia and clinical fellows who rotate through the anaesthesia subspecialties. Person Specification:
- Qualifications:
- Essential: Holder of Certificate of completion of training (CCT) training in Anaesthesia or equivalent, within six months of interview.
- FRCA or equivalent.
- Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), or eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- A minimum of 2 years experience of working in the NHS.
- A minimum of 1 years continuous experience as a Consultant Anaesthetist (locum or substantive).
- MSc, PhD or similar.
- Holder of Certificate for Transthoracic echo.
- Essential: Publications in peer reviewed literature, book chapters or poster presentations at conference, journals and/or letters published, presentations at national/international conferences, presentations at departmental/hospital level/grand rounds.
- Desirable: Research experience.
- Essential: Advanced airways skills (completion of airway fellowship), advanced regional skills (including nerve catheters), general subspecialties including vascular, major trauma and ortho, fellowship in Cardiothoracics, fellowship in Advanced Airway, paediatric anaesthetic experience.
- Desirable: TIVA techniques.
- Essential: Evidence to show teaching junior anaesthetic colleagues, teaching consultant colleagues, teaching nursing staff/ODPs/MDT, teaching medical students, evidence of teaching in a simulation centre, post grad teaching qualification, awards or prizes for presentations delivered or other aspects of medical career.
