Role: Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Location: St Dunstan's School

Start Date: 1 September 2026

Closing Date: 13 July 2026

Accountable to: Headteacher & SENCO

Hours per week: Monday to Friday - 32 hours per week plus 5 inset days

Salary Grade: Grade 6 - Actual Pay £23,434 to £25,040

Job Purpose: To work under the direct instruction of the SENCO and Senior Staff to co-ordinate and implement a range of effective interventions and case work to support SEND students to access the curriculum and fully participate in the day to day life of the school. The post holder will also provide general assistance to the SENCO in matters relating to SEND support in the school.

Main duties will include:

  • Assess the needs of pupils and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support pupils’ learning.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver interventions to support pupils, this includes programmes to support literacy, numeracy, handwriting and SEMH.
  • Establish constructive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
  • Develop a significant knowledge of pupils’ individual special educational needs and implement appropriate strategies as outlined on the students’ profile.
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Support pupils consistently whilst recognising and responding to their individual needs.
  • Encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all pupils in activities.
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence.
  • Employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance.
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement.
  • To provide pastoral support for pupils, within an agreed system of supervision.
  • To undertake assessments and gathering of information to support exams access arrangements.
  • Supervising lunchtime provisions for SEND pupils.
  • Planning and delivering small group interventions to students with SEND.

The successful candidate should also be:

  • Hard working and fully committed to the ethos of the school.
  • Organised and systematic.
  • Willing to undertake First Aid training and any other pertinent CPD linked to the role.
  • Able to work independently showing initiative.
  • Have an ability to relate well to both children and adults.
  • Enthusiastic and willing to try new ideas, taking responsibility for new initiatives.
  • Capable of working with staff from all areas of the school, external agencies and partner schools.
  • Interested in continuing professional development.
