Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Maintenance Technician to join our Facilities team. In this varied and rewarding role, you will help ensure our Hospice remains a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for the people who rely on us every day.

About the role:

  • Carry out general maintenance and repairs across the Hospice buildings and grounds.
  • Support with redecoration, small building projects, and upkeep of facilities.
  • Maintain and service equipment, keeping accurate records in line with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Conduct PAT testing and mandatory health and safety checks in accordance with Hospice and HSE standards.
  • Provide occasional maintenance support to our St Clare Hospice shops.
  • Assist with occasional out of hours Fundraising events
  • Participate in the emergency on call rota for the Hospice premises.

Main duties of the job

  • To maintain all equipment within the Hospice premises and grounds, including general building maintenance and repairs, redecoration, and small building projects
  • Occasional travel to St Clare Hospice shops to carry out general maintenance
  • Accurate recording of the servicing of hospice equipment in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
  • Carrying out mandatory Health & Safety testing as per hospice and HSE guidelines
  • Emergency On Call for hospice premises on a rota basis

Optional: Support for annual leave and sickness coverage as required.

About us

St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people affected by a life-limiting illness in West Essex and the borders of eastern Hertfordshire. Our care helps patients, their families, and carers, to make the most of every moment together, no matter how long they have left to live. We support them both at home and in the Hospice.

You will be working as part of the Facilities Team at the hospice that covers the Site Technicians, Housekeepers, and Catering staff. The Facilities Team is responsible for the maintenance, cleaning, catering and Health & Safety of this site as well as the Site Technicians being responsible for minor maintenance at all our retail outlets within Essex and Hertfordshire.

Job responsibilities

  • The maintenance of all equipment and plant, with the exception of IT, within the hospice according to the manufacturers specification and Hospice Infection Control requirements
  • To carry out general building repairs and redecoration, supervising groups of volunteers when required on hospice projects
  • To undertake small building projects, general carpentry, and basic plumbing and electrical work within the hospice or retail premises
  • Fire alarm and emergency light testing on a weekly basis, recording results and informing the Facilities Manager of any defects
  • Portable Appliance Testing of all electrical equipment as per hospice and HSE guidelines
  • Weekly and monthly equipment and plant checks, in accordance with the maintenance schedule
  • Carry out Health & Safety checks where required
  • Minor internal office moves
  • Collect and/or drop off medical equipment from servicing contractors
  • Minor maintenance within hospice shops in Essex and Herts
  • Evaluating and costing of proposed works for budget holders\’ decision
  • To participate in the Emergency on Call rota
  • Cover for annual leave and sickness

Person Specification

Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience

  • English and Maths to GCSE level 2 or equivalent
  • At least two years experience of a range of tasks
  • Risk Assessment experience and / or of CoSHH assessments
  • Electrical experience

Skills and Abilities

  • Able to use all types of DIY equipment, e.g. Electric drills, grinders, electric & hand saws, disc cutters, sanding equipment, routers, gas cylinders, electrical scanners
  • Able to follow and interpret manuals for equipment and machinery
  • Safe working regulations. Basic understanding of Health & Safety regulations
  • Will be required to gain basic skills for PAT Testing of electrical equipment

Other requirements

  • Full UK driving licence with access to own vehicle
  • Cover the On Call Emergency Rota
  • Cover for colleagues when required
  • To assist at out of hours events at the hospice
