Main duties of the job

We are seeking a highly motivated finance leader to join our high performing, respected local charity at a pivotal time. As we navigate a challenging financial landscape, your expertise will play a crucial role in strengthening our long‑term financial sustainability and ensuring we can continue delivering vital support to our local community. Along with many hospices, we have weathered real challenges in the recent past but are now in a solid financial position thanks to our supporters though we plan to reinforce our voluntary sources of funding through innovation and commercialism.

About us

St Catherines Hospice is a respected local charity providing specialist hospice care alongside statutory service partners (GPs, District nursing etc) across West Sussex and East Surrey. We have an effective specialist palliative and end‑of‑life care service model and are seeking to develop this further by building income opportunities and value arising from the NHS Long Term Plan (published July 2025). The Finance and IT Director will therefore play a leading role in providing sound financial support and advice to secure our future. We provide care in communities across Surrey and Sussex which are richly diverse and we want to reflect that in everything we do. Job responsibilities

The Finance and IT Director will bring:

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or CIPFA) with active membership of a recognised professional body.
  • Proven senior financial leadership experience, ideally within a charity, healthcare, or not‑for‑profit setting.
  • Experience working with Boards of Trustees and contributing to organisational governance.
  • Strong alignment with the values and compassionate mission of St. Catherines Hospice.
  • High integrity, ethical leadership, and a collaborative approach achieved through working closely together with the CE, the senior management team and engagement with each directorate.
  • A commitment to optimising an outsourced IT provision ensuring StCH oversight of this programme and all technology/digital projects supporting technology development (NB: this postholder is also StCH SIRO).

Person Specification

Experience

  • Proven senior financial leadership experience, ideally within a charity, healthcare, or not‑for profit setting.
  • Experience in charity accounting, including SORP, restricted/unrestricted funds, and compliance with Charity Commission regulations and retail operations.
  • Familiarity with investment management and treasury functions.

Qualifications

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or CIPFA) with active membership of a recognised professional body.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Charity Finance experience at a senior level.
