Teacher of Drama in Redhill

Drama is a very popular subject at St Bede's and is taught across all key stages. All drama lessons are taught by drama specialists and take place in specialist drama studios, with ample space for full practical engagement in all tasks. Our three custom built drama studios have superb technical facilities available to be used in lessons, including theatrical lighting and staging. The department is supported by a dedicated technician who is available to assist in lessons when equipment is required. All students in Year 7 and Year 8 participate in one hour of drama a week. Lessons are entirely practical explorations of a wide range of drama skills and genres, including mime, script work, non naturalism, Greek theatre, Commedia Dell'arte and pantomime. In addition to this, students are offered extra curricular drama opportunities to further develop their performance skills and commitment to the subject. Students that select to continue drama in Year 9 are taught three times a fortnight and we are frequently oversubscribed with students that select this option. Throughout the year, students focus on developing skills that will benefit their GCSE drama study, including physical theatre, text work, and an introduction to devising from stimuli. We study Edexcel at both GCSE and A Level drama. The GCSE course covers a wide range of skills, including devising, scripted work and deep textural analysis of The Crucible, as well as the study of a variety of live theatre performance. The course is popular in the school and we usually have two well subscribed groups per cohort. At A Level, students study set practitioners, including Artaud, Stanislavski, Brecht and Frantic Assembly. They create their own devised performances using a text as their stimulus, as well as working towards a final scripted exam incorporating group work, monologues and duologues. Their final written exam studies two set texts in detail, as well as the analysis of live theatre. Extra Curricular drama is extremely popular at St Bede's and has a high profile across the school. We run multiple KS3 drama clubs to allow younger students to develop confidence and core performance skills. They frequently perform at events and share their work widely. In addition to this, we have a strong tradition of producing large scale, whole school musicians, which are hugely oversubscribed. They involve students from all year groups both as performers and as musicians in the large band. We are also able to include a very large student technical team, which covers all areas including lighting, sound and backstage. We would welcome applications from enthusiastic, creative drama specialists, who would enjoy working closely with the department to lead exciting practical lessons, develop the drama curriculum with new ideas and help lead whole school drama initiatives. Training and support would be given by the highly experienced department if the right candidate has not taught the most recent GCSE and A level specifications.

We are close to the M25 and there are good transport links to London and the South Coast from Redhill station which is about 15 minutes walk from the school. We also benefit from being within walking distance of beautiful countryside . Many staff live locally, others commute from Guildford, South London, Kent and East & West Sussex.
