From 2024-2025, 118 young people received advice and support. 1,685 young people were supported by us during the year. 1,053 young people lived in our 40+ accommodation schemes. Up to 582 young people lived with us at any one time. 91% of young people moved on from St Basils in a planned, positive way.

Key Responsibilities:
- Operate within the local housing options team on set days if assessments are booked in or if crisis situations occur.
- Work with the housing options team to undertake housing and support needs assessments of young people aged 16 up to 25th birthday.
- Support young people in crisis from point of presentation until successfully accommodated to ensure a positive crisis resolution.
- Work alongside the local housing officer, children’s services, housing providers and other partner agencies when responding to crisis or emergency situations which could lead to the young person becoming homeless.
- Jointly assess young people under 18 years of age in full collaboration with the local authority Children’s Services and Housing Options Teams.
- Provide general advice, guidance, information, support to young person navigating through crisis, which includes where necessary advocating on issues relating to family conflict, welfare benefits and housing rights etc.
- Support in the arrangements to navigate a young person into Crash Pad services and ensure completion of housing benefit claims to cover the young person’s period of stay.
- Provide support and advice to young people residing in the Crash Pad and work alongside project staff, partner agencies whilst doing so.
- Assist in the pre-let preparation of the Crash Pad which may involve some cleaning duties.
- Attend allocation/pathway panel meetings as and when required and where applicable advocate on behalf of the young person in these.
- Support young people with personal budgeting.
Main Duties:
- Undertake strengths-based, person centred and holistic risk and needs assessments and develop support and risk management plans.
- Receive and respond to referrals in a timely manner.
- Refer young people on to the most appropriate service to meet their needs making sure that the young person meets the eligibility criteria for these services.
- Plan responses to presenting needs and circumstances in partnership with young people, parents/carers, other agencies and professionals to prevent homelessness, identify and negotiate the most suitable housing options.
- Be available to young people for regular support sessions.
- Respond to crisis or emergency situations in a professional and timely manner.
- Take responsibility for the safeguarding and welfare of young people.
- Ensure benefit claims are made and maintained in order to maximize a young person’s income.
- Organize and accompany young people to appointments as appropriate.
- Attend and provide overview of new applications at local allocations panel, assisting with information for MOPI’s as and when required.
- Support and encourage young people to develop positive family and other support networks.
- Advocate for and on behalf of the young person, representing their aspirations and managing expectations.
- Work as part of the team across area services providing cover for colleagues as required by the Team Leader or Youth Services Operations Manager.
- Assist in the induction of new staff as required by the Team Leader or Youth Services Manager.
- Ensure that crash pad and other temporary accommodation placements meet the needs of young people, considering issues in respect of health, educational need, ability, gender, religion, ethnic origin, culture and linguistic background.
- Manage and prioritise own caseload and evaluate each case making decisions on appropriate options, meeting deadlines and referring to other services and outside agencies as appropriate.
- Represent St Basils through attendance at designated meetings i.e. monthly Support Provider and contract meetings and case reviews meetings regarding young people, as and when required.
- Ensure the service is accessible to young people, all relevant parties kept abreast of outcomes and follow-up support provided as and when required.
- Keep up to date with current legislation, regulations and other new developments relating to young people and housing resources etc.
- Assist in the service development and achievement of key performance indicators in line with contract specifications and returns.
- Highlight trends, areas for development and gaps in service provision.
- Assist in updating policies and procedures.
- Maintain statistical information for monitoring and evaluation purposes in order to produce reports and statistics for key stakeholders.
- Represent and promote the work of the service at relevant external and internal meetings and forums.
- Be involved in the induction of new staff, to supervise and support volunteers, trainees and students.
QUALIFICATION:
Essential: NVQ 3 or above Advice & Guidance, Care or equivalent or working towards a Youth Work, Social Work, or equivalent qualification.
ROLE EXPERIENCE:
Essential: Working with young people in the following settings: Youth Work, Residential or Social Work, Probation, Community Work, Education and Training, Housing.
Desirable: Operating in a supported housing/homelessness environment. Experience, recognising and handling in an appropriate manner, confidential or sensitive information. Experience of safeguarding principles and best practice.
KNOWLEDGE:
Essential: Up to date knowledge of welfare rights and relevant legislation. Up to date knowledge of housing legislation. Knowledge of how safeguarding relates to the supported housing sector. Knowledge of and commitment to EDI / Anti-Discriminatory Practice. Ability to prepare and present different types of information (numeric/written/performance data etc). Administering and complying with detailed procedures.
