Key Responsibilities
- Work as a member of the clinical team across the Birmingham division, offering assessment, consultation and short‑term intervention for patients with substance misuse issues, including those with co‑occurring mental health and long‑term physical health conditions.
- Collaborate with patients, families, carers and other professionals, including ward‑based MDT, occupational therapy, psychology, primary care, social work, substance misuse services, police and other criminal justice agencies.
- Utilise an integrated motivational interviewing approach that is person‑centred, holistic and considers the patient’s social system.
- Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to formulate person‑centred and needs‑based care plans.
- Assess clinical risk, devise risk management plans, and deliver effective safeguarding in consultation with senior colleagues.
- Participate in clinical reviews of frequently attending patients, working with others to devise care management plans aimed at reducing unscheduled hospital attendances and emergency calls.
- Work closely with police and community mental health teams to support individuals with complex mental health and substance misuse needs who have had contact with the criminal justice system.
- Take an active role in promoting and developing the service and engaging in quality initiatives to enhance care delivery as part of the Reach Out collaborative.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Registered Nurse with significant post‑registration experience working with patients with alcohol and substance misuse dependency.
- In‑depth knowledge of pharmacological treatments for alcohol and substance misuse.
- Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
