The Head of Development and Fundraising leads all fundraising activity for the Cathedral, working closely with senior staff, trustees, volunteers, and external stakeholders. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the postholder plays a central role in shaping and delivering the Cathedral's fundraising strategy.
Responsibilities include planning and delivering a multi-million-pound capital fundraising appeal launching in 2027 as part of the Cathedral's 150th anniversary celebrations. This appeal will support long-term sustainability through projects in conservation, sustainability, music, and community engagement. Alongside the capital appeal, the role is responsible for maintaining and growing ongoing revenue income to support both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic priorities across areas such as heritage, landscaping, outreach, ministry, learning, and music.
The postholder works with existing fundraising bodies, including the Cathedral's Education and Music Trusts and the Friends of St Albans Cathedral, and develops income from streams such as major gifts, legacies, trusts and foundations, membership schemes, visitor donations, and congregational giving. The role involves building strong relationships with donors and funders, preparing grant applications, and ensuring appropriate reporting.
The Head of Development and Fundraising line-manages a part-time Development Executive, reports to the Chief Operating Officer, and works closely with the Dean, governing body, and relevant fundraising committees. The role is full-time (35 hours over 5 days). Part-time (28 hours over four days) would be considered as well as flexible working patterns and one day per week working from home.
