A leading specialty insurance group is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its in-house legal team. Reporting to the Legal Director, this is a broad generalist role covering corporate law, commercial contracts, dispute management and general legal advisory across UK and overseas entities.

The role suits a technically strong lawyer with a corporate background who is comfortable operating autonomously, managing matters end-to-end and advising at Board level.

Key Responsibilities
  • Day-to-day company law matters: board/shareholder matters and strategic projects
  • Leading contentious and non-contentious matters: disputes, property, commercial contracts
  • Providing pragmatic legal advice to senior stakeholders and the Board
  • Oversight of contracts register and key legal controls within the risk management programme
  • Instructing and coordinating external counsel
  • Line management of junior legal team member(s)
Requirements
  • Qualified solicitor of England & Wales with current practising certificate and 6+ years' PQE
  • Minimum 5 years' post-qualification experience in the corporate team of a top-tier law firm or in-house Financial Services company
  • Strong technical knowledge of corporate and contract law
  • Genuine interest in the insurance industry (essential)
  • Experience owning matters and balancing risk against commercial outcomes
  • Board-level stakeholder engagement experience
Advantageous
  • Insurance or financial services in-house experience
  • Knowledge of Lloyd's and FCA regulatory framework
  • Experience in litigation, property, data protection, technology contracts or AI
  • Line management experience
