Engineering Summer Placements – Transmission
Duration: 12 weeks commencing June 2026
Base Location: Aberdeen, Glasgow, Cumbernauld, Inverness, Perth, Thurso, or Peterhead
Salary: Circa £24,580 per annum (pro-rata)
Working Pattern: Fixed Term Contract | Full Time
What is the role?
Working as part of our multi-disciplined teams, we have a range of opportunities for students to support projects across our Transmission business. We\’re at the forefront of some high-profile projects which are ensuring our transmission network is structurally sound, operating safely and efficiently and providing sustainable and reliable energy to all.
We have ambitious net zero targets, and our business is growing to help us achieve our strategy. We\’re looking for students who can bring fresh ideas, new skills and creative thinking, to deliver innovative solutions to help us reach net zero.
Our Transmission Engineering summer placement provides real hands-on experience through a 12 week placement in one of our engineering based teams. Throughout the placement, you will have the support of a business mentor and buddy, who will provide guidance and support to enable you to reach your full potential.
About Our Teams
- HVDC Centre: As a part of SSEN Transmission, The National HVDC Centre is looking for Electrical Power Engineering Graduates to support the power system studies to de-risk the deployment of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technologies to deliver our net-zero targets.
- Project Engineering: Project Engineering is a core technical department within SSEN Transmission. Our summer placement programme will provide you with experience of working at the centre of the transition to Net Zero.
- HVDC Engineering: With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this.
- Marine: The Marine Team is a relatively new function within SSEN Transmission, established just over 2 years ago, to be ready, and indeed be a major part of the “Net Zero” race in the UK.
- System Performance: System Performance Engineers undertake power system studies to support the integration of low carbon generation and related technologies onto the transmission system in the north of Scotland.
- System Engineering And Investment: A team of techno-economic modelling experts as well as power system and investment engineers who are responsible for growth-related capital investment throughout the lifecycle of a project from initial development through to energisation.
What do I need?
Our opportunities are open to students who are in their 2nd year of their degree onwards and will graduate between 2027 and 2029. We\’d love you to have some practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team.
