Overview
We have exciting opportunities for Operations and Planning Engineers to join SSEN Transmission in the Control Centre in Perth. The team is responsible for ensuring programmes of planned operational and outage work are coordinated with key internal and external stakeholders, whilst maintaining acceptable levels of network security, and supporting the GB Electricity System Operator (NESO) in reducing operational constraint costs. The role supports the delivery of strategic reinforcement projects and connections, including new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems, FACTS devices, and large offshore windfarm connections.
There are two distinctive planning periods – Current Year Planning and Future-Year Planning. The Current-Year Planning Engineer works for the current working year in close collaboration with the Control Room Engineers. The Future-Years Planning Engineer works for 1 to 10 years ahead, coordinating and preparing all future years’ programmes with stakeholders across the wider Business.
You will
- Plan outage programmes for delivery of transmission projects, network maintenance, and telecoms works to ensure transmission operations are safe, reliable and secure.
- Review project stage-by-stage diagrams and site layout diagrams to assess network outages required during project execution.
- Support development and review of the Business’s future years outage plans, ensuring alignment and agreement with NESO and the other GB Transmission Owners.
- Conduct network studies using PSSE software to inform upcoming outage programmes, address technical queries, and ensure compliance with technical and security standards.
- Provide operational planning support, including analysis of network disturbance and fault events, and issue of operational guidelines on new network technologies.
Appointment to either a Current-Year Planning role, or a Future-Years Planning role, will be open to an applicant’s particular area of interest, and subject to their background and experiences. Roles seek experienced Operations or Planning Engineers; there may be opportunities to build experience and follow a development programme to progress to the job grading.
You have
- Degree level qualification in electrical engineering, or HNC level in electrical engineering (minimum) with relevant background.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of electrical power systems and related network design standards, with opportunities to develop technical skills within the team.
- Technical knowledge and communication skills to engage with project managers, engineers, stakeholders, and the NESO to optimise outage programmes and find solutions during changing conditions.
- Enthusiasm and ability to integrate with key stakeholders, the skills to interact with Delivery Teams, and the confidence to make key decisions.
