Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations and you'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office – Perth, Glasgow, Inverness or Aberdeen.

The role: As Development Portfolio Manager, you will lead a substantial portfolio of Large Capital Projects for the SSEN Transmission Business throughout the development phase, progressing onshore substation, overhead line and cable projects ranging in value from £40m to £1bn, which are critical to support the transition to NetZero. You’ll be responsible for overseeing and driving the strategic development and progression of projects through optioneering and design through to consents, ensuring projects are ready to transition into construction on time, to budget and meet our regulatory obligations.
Reporting into the Head of Onshore Development, you will work across multidisciplinary teams and engage with key stakeholders internally and externally to drive outcomes and deliver value for customers, communities and consumers.
- Lead and inspire a high‑performing team of Project Managers to progress the development of your portfolio through the optioneering and design phases up to provision of consents and readiness for construction, with an ability to develop the optimum project solution, deliver to challenging timescales and manage up to 25 projects simultaneously.
- Manage significant development budgets (typically £25m and above) and lead on forecasting and planning for an overall capital expenditure pipeline exceeding £7bn across the onshore portfolio.
- Drive project programmes to maintain project milestones and develop mitigation as required where issues are encountered for your project portfolio.
- Support the development, planning and implementation of key business strategies to support future growth by engaging with numerous external stakeholders.
- Coach and develop your team cultivating the skills, experience and capability needed to meet future business requirements and adapt to evolving industry challenges.
You have:
- Proven leadership experience with substantial experience in developing, managing and reporting on large‑scale infrastructure projects, preferably within energy transmission, utilities or other regulated environments.
- Engineering or project management professional qualification or degree (or equivalent) with deep technical understanding of infrastructure development.
- Practical knowledge of relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, including Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
- Experience of the NEC3 suite of contracts, focusing on the Engineering and Construction and Professional Services Contracts.
- Experience of project development through the optioneering and design phases up to construction, with an ability to develop the optimum project solution, deliver to timescales and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
