The role

At SSEN Transmission, we're building a smarter, more flexible network for net zero, delivering clean, secure and affordable electricity for generations to come.

We're looking for a Principal Engineer - Building Services to help define technical policy, influence industry standards and support the delivery of innovative, future-ready projects across our transmission network.

  • You will
  • Write, maintain and own technical specifications required for substation mechanical services and their interfaces with plant and equipment used on the transmission network, including battery systems, fire protection, ventilation, water supplies, air conditioning and innovative new technologies.
  • Review existing specifications and update them based on lessons learned from projects, emerging technology and changes in relevant standards.
  • As part of the Technical Authority review process, approve apparatus, equipment, inspection test plans and inspection test records, witness tests and produce Technical Authority reports to ensure selected technology is adequately tested, proven and validated.
  • Provide subject matter expert input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority, offering specialist input where required and verifying that project proposals are fit for purpose.
  • Provide technical consultancy across SSEN Transmission, share specialist knowledge, support staff development and represent SSEN Transmission at industry events and working groups such as ENA, IEC or CIGRE.
  • You have
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status through a relevant institution or a commitment to working towards chartered status.
  • Expert-level experience in the design, specification, construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical services within a data centre, substation or industrial environment.
  • The ability to technically assess issues, critically review a range of solutions and apply detailed knowledge of relevant national and international standards, including National Grid, Energy Networks Association, British and European specifications and standards.
  • Experience managing a range of stakeholders, including engineering, asset management, contractors and other technical partners.
  • A data-led approach to design validation and specification compliance for transmission substation building requirements, with experience in manufacturing, testing or commissioning of transmission voltage substation electrical services and auxiliary systems considered advantageous.
