About the role Base Location: Perth Salary: £65,752 – £76,366 + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family. Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available SSE Networks Transmission (SSENT) is enjoying a period of rapid growth in response to the significant development in renewable generation across the north of Scotland, and progression towards the UK climate change targets. To meet this expansion, we have an exciting opportunity for a Transmission Operations and Planning Engineer at the Control Centre in Perth. The team is responsible for ensuring all short-term and long-term programmes of planned operational and outage works have been internally coordinated, approved by the GB National Energy System Operator (NESO), and ready for the Control Room to manage the real-time operations. It requires network outages to be coordinated efficiently with all key internal and external stakeholders, whilst maintaining acceptable levels of network security, and supporting NESO in reducing operational constraint costs. The roles support delivery of key strategic reinforcement projects and connections, including new HVDC systems, FACTS devices, and large offshore windfarm connections. We have an opportunity for a role in two distinctive planning periods. As a Current-Year Planning Engineer, covering the current working year from day-ahead to year-end, working in close collaboration with the Control Room Engineers. Or as a Future-Years Planning Engineer, from 1 to 10 years ahead, working with stakeholders across the wider business to coordinate and prepare all future years’ operational and outage programmes. The key responsibilities for both roles include the following: – Plan outage programmes for delivery of transmission projects, network maintenance, and telecoms works, to ensure the transmission system operates reliably and effectively. – Review project stage-by-stage single line diagrams and site layout diagrams to assess network outages required during project execution. – Support development and review of the Business’s future years outage plans, ensuring alignment and agreement with NESO and the other GB Transmission Owners. – Conduct network studies using PSSE software, in current year and future years timescales, to inform on upcoming outage programmes, address technical queries, and ensure compliance with technical and security standards. – Provide operational planning support, including analysis of network disturbance and fault events, and issue of operational guidelines on new network technologies. Appointment to either a Current-Year Planning Engineer role, or a Future-Years Planning Engineer role, will be open to an applicant’s particular area of interest, and subject to their background and experiences. The roles seek an experienced Planning Engineer, however there may be opportunities to build experience in the role and to follow a development / training programme to progress to the job grading. What do I need? To be considered for this role, we would love you to have: – Degree level qualification in electrical engineering, although qualifications to HNC level in electrical engineering (minimum) with the relevant background will be considered. – Sound knowledge and understanding of electrical power systems and the related network design standards, although there will be opportunities to develop your technical skills within the team. – Technical knowledge and communication skills to engage with project managers, engineers, stakeholders, and the National Grid Electricity System Operator to optimise the outage programmes and find solutions during changing conditions. – Enthusiasm and ability to integrate with key stakeholders, the skills to interact with the Delivery Teams, and the confidence to make key decisions. About our Business At SSEN Transmission , we take immense pride in owning and operating the high-voltage electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland. We transport energy from where it is generated to wherever it is needed, ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for the communities we serve. By developing, building and maintaining a network for net zero, we’re creating secure power for generations to come. What’s in it for you?
