Base Location: Successful applicants must be based in one of our Scottish locations – Aberdeen, Inverness, Perth or Glasgow. You will be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office.

Role: As part of SSEN Transmission’s Offshore portfolio of works, we have an opportunity for an Engineering Manager to join our Offshore HVAC Project Engineering team. In this role, you will support the successful delivery of our Island and Offshore projects and contribute to building a resilient network for Net Zero. Our Island and Offshore projects facilitate connections to HVDC systems and include state‑of‑the‑art AC grid control and stabilisation technology. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to help deliver complex, large‑scale infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities:
- Support the delivery of engineering scope (Large Capital Projects Gate 0 to Gate 5) for assigned project/packages (typical value £100 M – £1 000 M), ensuring engineering risks are identified early and appropriately managed.
- Collaborate with contractors and project stakeholders to coordinate substation development, standardisation and innovation activities, including organising design reviews and technical sessions (e.g. HAZID/HAZOP/HAZCON and Design Authority Reviews).
- Lead and support a team of substation engineers, coordinating engineering activities throughout the project development phase.
- Work alongside the wider technical and project teams to ensure alignment with regional strategy and standardised design, acting as a key contact for technical queries and supporting engagement with Technical Authorities where required.
- Promote a strong safety culture across the project portfolio, including Safety in Design, CDM compliance and Principal Designer (PD) practices, in partnership with the Project Manager.
- Support the development of Design Management Plans, Engineering Works Information and design review schedules, helping to ensure effective and high‑quality technical delivery.
Qualifications:
- A degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (ideally Electrical and/or CEng), or equivalent experience, with a background in substation design and delivery.
- Technical knowledge of the Transmission network, including an understanding of key systems, supporting functions and relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. CDM, ESQCR) and its application within Transmission network projects and asset management.
- Experience building strong relationships with consultants and industry partners, and the ability to communicate complex technical information in a clear and collaborative way to support decision making.
