Base Location: Aberdeen, Glasgow, Cumbernauld, Inverness, Perth, Thurso, or Peterhead

What is the role?
Working as part of our multi-disciplined teams, we have a range of opportunities for students to support projects across our Transmission business. We\'re at the forefront of some high-profile projects which are ensuring our transmission network is structurally sound, operating safely and efficiently and providing sustainable and reliable energy to all.

Our Transmission Engineering summer placement provides real hands-on experience through a 12 week placement in one of our engineering based teams. Throughout the placement, you will have the support of a business mentor and buddy, who will provide guidance and support to enable you to reach your full potential.
Our summer placement students work collaboratively in a variety of contexts, while also taking ownership of their role by working under their own direction to drive action forward. There will also be networking and presentation opportunities, specialist sessions and support from our graduates.
About our teams
HVDC Centre:
As a part of SSEN Transmission, The National HVDC Centre is looking for Electrical Power Engineering Graduates to support the power system studies to de-risk the deployment of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technologies to deliver our net-zero targets. Over the next decade, the electricity transmission network that we operate will be dramatically reshaped by HVDC to integrate massive offshore wind power to achieve net-zero. Our team of power system experts are key to enabling and de-risking this journey.
Degree Disciplines: 3rd or 4th year Undergraduate, Master, or PhD student; in Electrical Power Engineering, or have undertaken relevant modules and/or research project in Electrical Power Engineering.
Locations: Cumbernauld at the National HVDC Centre.
Project Engineering:
Project Engineering is a core technical department within SSEN Transmission. Our summer placement programme will provide you with experience of working at the centre of the transition to Net Zero. You will receive training to work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects covering innovations that will allow us to meet these technological challenges.
Degree Disciplines: Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering.
Locations: Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness.
HVDC Engineering:
With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this. SSEN Transmission are working on a significant number of new HVDC schemes deployed in Great Britain over the coming years. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects, and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmission own Network in the North of Scotland, enabling the connection of more than 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid.

Marine:
The Marine Team is a relatively new function within SSEN Transmission, established just over 2 years ago, to be ready, and indeed be a major part of the \"Net Zero\" race in the UK. We have an increasing portfolio of substantial Marine Installation projects for at least the next 10 years, including the installation of critical national infrastructure and its on-going protection. The team is building the capacity for \"best in class\" offshore cable installation projects, putting a team together to manage all aspects of marine delivery, Safety, Logistics, Vessel Assurance, and Survey support throughout the lifetime of the marine infrastructures lifespan.
Degree Disciplines: Logistics management, Subsea, Construction Management, Marine Management, Safety and Operational Risk management.
Locations: Aberdeen.
System Performance:
System Performance Engineers undertake power system studies to support the integration of low carbon generation and related technologies onto the transmission system in the north of Scotland. Our System Performance team carries out advanced power system studies with cutting edge techniques and high-performance computing facilities.
Degree Disciplines: Electrical Engineering, but must have completed their 2nd year of studies.
Locations: Glasgow.
System Engineering and Investment:
A team of techno-economic modelling experts as well as power system and investment engineers who are responsible for growth-related capital investment throughout the lifecycle of a project from initial development through to energisation, undertaking power system analysis to specify system requirements and inform detailed engineering designs. They are the technical stakeholder interface for customers looking to connect to our transmission network and undertake power system analysis against industry codes and standards to inform customers connection offers. The team are also the custodians of the network models across SSEN Transmission, and are responsible for building, maintaining and quality assuring the network models as well as the software packages used for the system studies
Degree Disciplines: Numerate Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, or Renewable Energy.
Locations: Perth or Glasgow.
What do I need?
Our opportunities are open to students who are in their 2nd year of their degree onwards and will graduate between 2027 and 2029.
We\'d love you to have some practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You\'ll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges and should have a genuine interest in SSE and the prospect of a long-term future with us.
