The role: Our control support team is looking for a Senior Modelling and Analysis Engineer to offer expertise and assistance to the 24/7 real-time Transmission control room, support the Transmission outage planning team, and help ensure and maintain system readiness and resilience. In this position, you will apply system modelling expertise to develop and enhance control room capabilities for safe network operation in northern Scotland. You will help advance operational modelling tools, shape technical standards, and support major transmission projects, including HVDC systems, FACTS devices, and offshore windfarm connections.
You will:
- Offer expert power system modelling support for control teams, covering real-time analysis tools and study support for operational and long-term resilience planning.
- Develop the power system modelling capability of the Transmission control room to include areas such as dynamic system studies and EMT modelling capability.
- Provide technical leadership within the team and wider control room and provide training and mentoring for less experienced colleagues.
- Represent SSEN Transmission in external meetings and on industry workgroups.
- Take the lead on scoping and delivering innovation projects ensuring that our business is at the forefront of new developments in system modelling and monitoring.
You have:
- Degree level qualification in electrical engineering or similar subject, although qualifications to HNC level in electrical engineering (minimum) with the relevant industry experience will be considered.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards this level.
- Comprehensive expertise in electrical power systems and network standards, with proven problem-solving skills through logical analysis and teamwork that could be applicable to real-time control settings.
- Experience with industry standard analysis tools such as PSS/E, Power Factory or PSCAD.
- Knowledge of the Python scripting language would also be advantageous.
- In-depth knowledge of the electricity industry, including interfaces with the regulator, the Electricity System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured technical reports and use your knowledge and communication skills to engage with senior engineers and other industry stakeholders such as NESO, as well as providing technical advice to senior management.
