The role: SSEN Transmission is looking for a Senior Marine Consents Manager to help develop and consent some of the most significant subsea cable projects in Europe. From inter-island connections in the Northern Isles to large-scale HVDC systems, you’ll be at the forefront of energy infrastructure development. If you have a strong understanding of the marine environment and experience in offshore development and consenting, this is your chance to shape the future of clean energy. Alongside working on critical subsea cable projects, you’ll join a multi-award-winning team recently recognised as the Royal Town Planning Institute ‘In House Planning Team of the Year’ for 2025. Marine operations run 24/7 year-round, so a commitment to being available during key activities is essential. The role also requires travel, sometimes at short notice, to project sites and vessels.

You will:

  • Line manage a team of Marine Consent Managers and Assistants, ensuring that their workload is planned and delivered on time and to a high standard.
  • Be responsible for developing and consenting a portfolio of subsea infrastructure in Scotland and the wider UK, working at the leading edge of project development, consenting and environmental management.
  • Apply expert knowledge of the marine environment, including species, habitats, and ecological systems to the site selection, consenting and environmental compliance of subsea cable projects.
  • Produce and review high-quality environmental reports and impact assessments, commission work to EIA standards, and interpret marine survey data, with experience in ISO-compliant environmental auditing valued.

Our team is diverse and being able to work and understand different communication styles and needs is important.

You have:

  • Demonstrable line management and workload planning experience.
  • Experience engaging with Scottish and UK governments, including supporting and reviewing the development of guidance and legislation.
  • Strong marine industry expertise, including experience working in the marine environment and interpreting marine survey data such as bathymetry, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling and benthic sampling in relation to marine habitats and impact mitigation.
  • A deep understanding of marine legislation and its interaction with offshore development, with the ability to assess projects from initial design, determine licensing requirements for each stage and independently manage regulatory processes.
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking and strategic planning skills, with the confidence to influence project teams, challenge stakeholders when required and support positive environmental outcomes.
