Base Location: You'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in our Reading office.

Salary: £50,100 - £75,100 + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role:

As a Senior Energy Meteorologist in SSE’s Energy Markets team, you’ll join and support the operational teams at the heart of the Group’s journey to a net zero future. This is an opportunity to bring your meteorological expertise to a role where your insight will help shape commercially informed decisions across our wholesale energy portfolio. Working closely with colleagues across Trading, Planning and Risk, you’ll provide trusted short- and medium-term weather insight that supports day-to-day operations, strengthens resilience, and helps optimise our wind and wider renewable portfolio. It’s a role for someone who values the impact that careful analysis, collaboration, clear communication, and shared decision-making can have in a dynamic and evolving environment.

You will:

  • Provide clear, timely and trusted short- and medium-term weather forecasts that support balanced and effective operational decision-making.
  • Interpret complex weather models with experience and sound judgement, communicating confidence levels, risks and alternative scenarios in an accessible way.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships across Meteorology, Trading and Planning, contributing to an inclusive team culture and shared success.
  • Offer meaningful insight into weather, wind and solar patterns, helping improve forecast performance, reduce imbalance costs and strengthen portfolio resilience.
  • Continuously look for ways to improve forecasting approaches, embracing scientific, technical and AI developments to enhance quality, safety and business value.

You have:

  • A strong academic background in meteorology, science, mathematics or a related discipline, ideally to postgraduate level.
  • Experience of interpreting weather models and translating technical information into clear, practical guidance for operational or commercial stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical and numerical capability, alongside an interest in coding, data management and continuous improvement.
  • A genuine passion for weather systems, renewable energy and the role high-quality forecasting plays in decision-making.
  • A warm, confident and collaborative communication style, with the ability to explain your thinking clearly, influence positively and work closely with others.
