Base Location: Reading, Havant, New Forest, Perth, Glasgow, Inverness. You'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in one of these locations.

Overview: Due to continued growth, we are looking for a Civil Engineer to join our Large Capital Delivery’s Engineering Design and Consent Team. The team carries out feasibility and detail design work for capital replacement & reinforcement of new and existing SSEN assets, ensuring the electricity network infrastructure is ready for NetZero. We respond to challenging changes in licence obligations and competition, with an annual budget in the region of £300M.

As the Civil Engineer, you will support civil design consultants, contract partners and SSEN Design Engineers. You will assist in designing and managing the civil elements of projects from initial high‑level scope through detailed design into construction, supporting the development of value‑engineered designs in a high‑quality, timely, cost‑effective, safe and efficient manner.

You will:

  • Develop detailed project designs that can be consented and safely constructed in compliance with SSEN standards and specifications.
  • Review or verify design calculations, checking and approving designs to ensure the most appropriate and cost‑effective solutions are selected to meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide engineering or technical advice relating to the project designs.
  • Support the Technical Authority team in developing SSEN standards and specifications.
  • Assist with development and innovation of new ways of working.

You have:

  • A good understanding of Health and Safety legislation, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (2015).
  • A qualification (minimum of HNC level) in a relevant discipline or demonstrable experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of power system substation design and operation up to 132kV.
  • An understanding of structural engineering, reinforced‑concrete structures, buildings, foundations, roads and pavements, drainage, flooding.
  • Knowledge of project management and MS Office methodology would be advantageous.
