Base Location: You’ll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in one of the following locations – Perth, Glasgow, Pitlochry or Contin.
Salary: SS08 £54,952 – £64,738 depending on skills and experience + car/car allowance – if applicable + performance related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Role: SSE Renewables operate the largest fleet of hydro‑electric power assets across eight hydro schemes in Scotland. Our portfolio totals 1,459MW of installed capacity, which includes pumped storage and flexible hydro. The Fisheries Biologist plays a key role in supporting the Hydro Technology Business Unit (TBU) to operate, maintain and optimise its assets. You’ll ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements relating to fish populations, deliver mitigation programmes and provide expert advice to balance operational performance with environmental protection. Acting as the technical authority, you’ll represent the business at external forums and build strong relationships with key stakeholders including SEPA, NatureScot, the Marine Directorate and local fisheries groups. Due to the nature of the role, travel between sites will be required.
Some of your other main accountabilities will include:
- Maintaining Legal Compliance Requirements for fishery protection and going beyond this where possible.
- Stakeholder Management and Engagement with external fishery interests.
- Guidance and Advice to the Hydro business on fishery management and protection.
- Supporting Scientific Research, directly and indirectly, into fishery related topics.
To be successful in this role, we would love you to have:
- Technical competence in regard to the preparation and review of scientific reports and analysis.
- Proficiency in operating fish traps and knowledgeable in fish handling/tagging best‑practice.
- A thorough and up‑to‑date knowledge of salmon biology and management of the species.
- A thorough knowledge of fisheries management in Scotland including the jurisdiction and function of District Salmon Fishery Boards and regulators.
- Broad knowledge and understanding of applicable environmental legislation associated with the operation and maintenance of hydro generation plant in Scotland/UK.
