The role SSE Renewables operate the largest fleet of hydro‑electric power assets across eight hydro schemes in Scotland. Our portfolio totals 1,459 MW of installed capacity, which includes pumped storage and flexible hydro. Our assets consist of some of the most iconic power station sites constructed, which brought hydro‑electric power to the Scottish Glens 80 years ago.
As Operations Systems Engineer, you’ll contribute directly to delivering the clean energy needed today while helping build a better world of energy for tomorrow. In this role, you will ensure that the systems supporting our centralised 24/7 Hydro operations meet business requirements and maintain high service availability. You will collaborate closely with specialist teams across Project Delivery, Operational Technology (OT), Information Technology (IT), and Voice and Data Telecoms, applying your expertise in control systems, safe systems of work, and grid trading requirements to support the safe, resilient and efficient operation of our renewable energy assets.
Accountabilities
- Assessing, configuring and commissioning changes to operational systems supporting hydro overhauls and site improvements, working closely with project and programme teams.
- Designing and delivering system enhancements and innovations with OT, IT and Telecoms teams to meet required security and resilience standards whilst maximising operational value.
- Developing and implementing processes that improve efficiency and support emerging operational needs in line with security and resilience standards.
- Creating and executing test scripts for critical OT and IT systems to ensure high‑quality upgrades and developments.
- Acting as first‑line support for operational systems during office hours, assisting with fault resolution and liaising with relevant teams as needed.
Qualifications
- A degree level qualification (or equivalent) in an engineering or IT discipline, or substantial industry experience with systems and applications used in an OT environment.
- Working knowledge of SCADA / control room systems. An awareness of basic trading and Grid Code requirements will be beneficial.
- An understanding of Safe System of Work (SSoW) and relevant authorisations is desirable.
- Proven ability in evaluating business requirements, whilst identifying and implementing innovative and effective business improvements across a range of possible solutions.
- A systematic, disciplined and analytical approach to problem solving with strong prioritisation skills.
