The role:

At SSE, our trading teams play a vital role in balancing the UK's energy system, optimising market opportunities and supporting the transition to a net zero future. As Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) become increasingly important in delivering a cleaner, more flexible energy network, we're looking for a commercially minded Battery Trader to join our high‑performing team. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of a rapidly evolving market, using your analytical insight and commercial judgement to maximise the value of SSE's battery portfolio while ensuring safe, compliant and responsible operations that support customers, communities and the wider energy system.

You will:

  • Optimise SSE's battery assets by managing short‑term dispatch, scheduling and trading activity across a growing BESS portfolio, always maintaining a strong focus on operational safety, compliance and risk management.
  • Identify and capture market opportunities by analysing wholesale power prices, ancillary service markets, asset availability and operational constraints to maximise commercial returns.
  • Execute trading strategies across short‑term power markets, balancing mechanisms and ancillary services, making clear and informed decisions in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, contribute to transparent reporting and support the delivery of commercial, operational and financial objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across trading, operations, analytics and technology teams to continuously improve systems, processes and optimisation capabilities.

You have:

  • Experience in a commercial, trading or analytical role, ideally within energy, commodities, asset optimisation or another dynamic market environment.
  • A genuine interest in energy markets and the transition to a low‑carbon future; knowledge of GB or European power markets would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and use insights to support effective decision‑making.
  • The confidence to make sound judgements under pressure while maintaining a thoughtful, safety‑conscious and risk‑aware approach.
  • A collaborative and proactive mindset, with a passion for continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and working as part of an inclusive, supportive team.
