Help shape the future of energy. At SSEN Transmission, our Graduate Engineering Programme gives you the chance to work on some of the most exciting infrastructure projects in the UK. You will help connect more renewable energy, strengthen the grid, and play a key role in achieving the UKs Net Zero targets. Over two years, you will gain hands-on experience, professional development and the opportunity to make a real impact from day one. As part of your application, you will select which of our engineering teams you want to join. Each offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills and contribute to the future of energy. HVDC Engineering Work on High Voltage Direct Current projects that connect Scotlands renewable energy to the National Grid. Key projects include the Shetland HVDC Link which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland project, the first multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme outside China, and the Eastern Green Link, a planned HVDC connection from the east coast of Scotland to northeast England. The team also delivers embedded links across our network enabling over 10GW of renewable energy to reach the National Grid. Graduates gain experience on planning, design, and delivery of cutting-edge HVDC technology. Base locations: Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness Degrees: Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Geotechnical, Subsea Offshore AC Engineering HVAC This team designs and delivers offshore AC networks and wind farm connections to islands and mainland networks. Projects include advanced AC plant, grid control, and stabilisation technology. Graduates work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects with the first year focused on technical and business foundations and the second year on design and project delivery. Base locations: Glasgow, Inverness Degrees: Electrical, Civil Project Engineering Project Engineering is a core technical department delivering large-scale transmission infrastructure projects. Graduates develop expertise working on innovations that support Net Zero, building foundational technical and business experience in the first year and moving to design and project delivery in the second year. Base locations: Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness Degrees: Electrical/Electronic, Electrical/Mechanical, Electrical Power, Mechanical, Materials, Civil HVDC/FACTS Operations Work on the operation and maintenance of HVDC and Flexible AC Transmission Systems including HVDC converters, HVDC cable systems, Static Synchronous Compensators STATCOM, Static Var Compensators SVC, and Synchronous Condenser SYNCON assets. These critical assets increase power transfer, voltage control, reactive power support, and overall grid stability. Graduates gain experience across design, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance while also learning about wider business functions. Base locations: Inverness, Aberdeen, Elgin, Perth, Dundee, Argyll Degrees: Electrical, Mechanical Civil Operations The Operations Civils and Buildings team supports the full lifecycle of our network from project development through to decommissioning. Graduates play a vital role in the Net Zero transition gaining hands-on experience and tailored training to engineer and deliver solutions that keep the network running safely and efficiently. From day one, graduates are paired with a mentor and involved in multiple workstreams preparing them for operational engineering roles. Base locations: Inverness, Aberdeen, Elgin, Perth, Dundee, Argyll Degrees: Civil What do I need to join? Youll need a minimum of a 2:2 bachelors degree in one of the disciplines listed above. We are looking for graduates who can demonstrate a passion for the energy sector, ideally supported by some practical work experience. You should have experience working effectively in a team, be comfortable setting and achieving ambitious individual goals, and be able to use your own initiative to overcome challenges. A genuine interest in SSEN Transmission and the prospect of building a long-term career with us is also essential. We want you to feel confident about what happens next in our recruitment process, which has three stages: Online Testing, Video Interview, and an In-Person Assessment Centre.
