As well as direct involvement in complex projects, you will play a key role in supporting Engineering Managers, guiding Project Engineers within your discipline, and ensuring that the engineering basis of design, scope and delivery aligns with business requirements, technical standards, and regulatory obligations.

You will act as a focal point for Protection & Control expertise, promoting best practice, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring the quality and consistency of engineering deliverables across the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV transmission network.

You will:

  • Provide senior technical guidance and leadership and assurance across Protection & Control projects, supporting the definition of scope, project approach and resolution of key risks to ensure safe, compliant and efficient delivery.
  • Execute and support complex technical assignments, applying advanced engineering techniques to develop and improve processes, systems, and design approaches within the discipline.
  • Implement and promote CDM procedures and practices, supporting safe design principles and ensuring all regulatory and legislative requirements are met across project activities.
  • Support and develop Project Engineers through mentoring, technical guidance and knowledge sharing, contributing to capability growth and professional development within the Protection & Control discipline.
  • Proactively manage consultants and contractors, including defining scopes of work, reviewing deliverables and supporting performance management to ensure value for money and alignment with project requirements.

You have:

  • Demonstrable experience in Protection and Control engineering including development, design, specification and settings of transmission level protection and control systems, preferably including the use of IEC 61850 with clear ability to technically assess issues, and critically produce a range of technical solutions.

  • Understanding of the technical requirements for design, planning, operation and development of the transmission network and aspects requiring coordination with other project disciplines.
  • Effective communication skills, and you must be able to communicate often complex technical issues clearly and concisely to facilitate decision making by senior management. You will be able to communicate effectively with key stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally, with an appetite for building strong, lasting relationships.
  • Chartered Engineer accreditation with a relevant institution or a clear plan for working towards this.
