Base Salary: £34,000 + comprehensive benefits.

Degree Disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering.

Working Pattern: Permanent, Full Time, starting Autumn 2026.

What is the Role?

Our programme delivers real hands‑on experience. Graduates follow a specialist pathway, working with the Distribution System Operation (DSO) directorate to prepare for one of the substantive posts at the end of the programme. Applicants may indicate their preferred role.

  • System Planning Engineer – System Planning (Reading)
    • Model networks, support CAPEX investment, coordinate designs with delivery teams.
  • Innovation Project Engineer – Future Networks (Glasgow or Reading)
    • Deliver innovative projects, manage proposals, communicate with stakeholders.
  • DSO Engineer – Network Operations (Portsmouth, Reading, Perth, Glasgow)
    • Support flexibility markets, procure and dispatch products, develop flexibility products.
  • DSO Forecasting Engineer/Analyst – Modelling and Reporting (Glasgow or Reading)
    • Forecast future energy usage, apply probabilistic approaches, support decarbonisation investments.
  • DSO System Planning Engineer SHEPD (Perth, Inverness, Aberdeen, Glasgow)
    • Model networks, coordinate designs, support CAPEX investment.

  • Minimum 2:2 in a listed degree discipline.
  • Alignment with SSE values, passion for the energy sector.
  • Highly flexible, agile thinking, initiative to overcome challenges.
