The role

We are looking for an Assistant Power System Engineer to join The National HVDC Centre and work on cutting-edge projects in GB and the international power industry. Opened in April 2017, the Centre is the national hub for HVDC modelling and simulation, knowledge exchange, and research. We use state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities to model and resolve complex issues before they impact on the delivery or operation of HVDC projects. Our globally recognised work helps to ensure the integrity and security of GB energy supplies as we transition to a net zero network.

You will:

  • Contribute to and lead work streams of HVDC or power system analysis and simulation activities, including EMT and/or real-time studies, using simulation platforms, vendor-supplied models and hardware-in-the-loop facilities under appropriate guidance.
  • Contribute to technical projects by carrying out defined analysis tasks, developing clear technical outputs, and helping communicate findings through reports, presentations, and project discussions.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partners to build business capability, support research activities, and contribute to the delivery and operation of real-world HVDC projects.
  • Help support the effective operation of The National HVDC Centre, including assisting with simulation and test facilities, customer-facing activities, hosting arrangements, and routine facility-related tasks.
  • Develop awareness of industry groups and innovation programmes, contributing where appropriate while building technical knowledge, professional judgement and experience in HVDC technology.

You have:

  • A willingness to support technical projects and processes within the HVDC Centre, working under guidance and taking ownership of defined tasks as experience develops.
  • Practical experience or academic exposure in leading a work stream of EMT studies and/or real-time simulation, preferably for a power system that involves converters, at PhD level or with equivalent industrial experience.
  • A good understanding of electricity transmission networks principles, including core network components, with an interest in developing knowledge of HVDC and/or FACTS technologies.
  • The ability to communicate technical information clearly, contribute to structured technical reports and engage constructively with colleagues, customers and stakeholders.
  • A collaborative and motivated approach, working effectively with others to deliver high quality outcomes and contribute to the continued development of a world class organisation.
