The role:
The Transmission Cyber Security team is responsible for implementing security processes and standards across the transmission business. The team focuses primarily on protecting the digital systems that help keep the lights on (Operational Technology), while also serving as a trusted point of contact for wider cyber security queries and risks affecting the business. This includes guiding the secure-by-design approach for transmission projects, from major capital delivery programmes to digital initiatives, as well as monitoring systems and providing assurance that existing security controls remain effective.
This role will lead a team of security engineers and security architects, helping to ensure that proportionate security requirements are defined for projects and supporting those project teams to implement and test the related controls. The portfolio will span a diverse range of initiatives, including new-build substations, network and SCADA replacements, and new condition monitoring and asset management systems.
You will:
- Lead the Transmission security engineering team (approximately 8 permanent security engineers, alongside additional contracted resource), supporting workload planning, nurturing individual development, and building a trusted and capable team.
- Provide technical oversight of the overall security architecture within Transmission, helping to ensure strong alignment and close collaboration where responsibilities meet across teams.
- Continually enhance our security standards so that expectations are clear, practical, and achievable, while working in partnership with teams across SSE to adopt common approaches and suggest improvements to group policies and standards.
- Make thoughtful, risk‑based decisions to ensure security standards are proportionate and balanced alongside wider business priorities, including delivering a network for net zero.
- Support the wider security team in strengthening our overall cyber capability and meeting the requirements of the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations 2018 and the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF).
You have:
- Experience defining, implementing, and testing security controls and requirements aligned to recognised international standards within an Operational Technology environment, including direct experience securing systems across all Purdue levels.
- Experience leading a team of technical experts, including supporting performance and development, and helping to navigate differing viewpoints constructively.
- The ability to assess risks associated with control weaknesses across multiple systems and communicate clear recommendations for mitigation or acceptance to leadership and non‑technical audiences.
- Experience working within electricity transmission or another regulated utility environment.
- Recognised academic qualifications in a STEM subject, alongside relevant cyber security certifications in operational technology.
