Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations – Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness.

Salary: £40,600 – £61,000 + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

At SSEN Transmission, we\’re at the forefront of the UK\’s journey to net-zero, supporting the development and delivery of major, large-scale terrestrial transmission infrastructure. As a Consents and Environment Manager, you will work on iconic national infrastructure projects, directly facilitating Scotland’s ambitions to meet Net Zero through the transmission of renewable energy.

Consents and Environmental Manager (Development)

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary project team you will secure Planning Permission and Electricity Act consents for Nationally significant electricity infrastructure projects (Planning Permission, Electricity Act and Environmental consents). You will coordinate site appraisals and optioneering studies to ensure all consenting and technical risks are understood and incorporated into the development and refinement of project design. By managing external consultations, you will ensure the delivery of proportionate and robust Environmental Impact Assessments and develop mutually beneficial external stakeholder relationships with consenting bodies, statutory authorities, key consultees, and government departments. Senior Managers will be responsible for managing a small team of Consent & Environment Mangers (and assistants) for a portfolio of projects.

Consents and Environmental Managers (Construction)

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary project team you will support projects preparing for site construction, coordinate timely discharge of conditions, and ensure consenting and environmental contract specifications are robust to fully comply with all consent and statutory obligations. You will implement proportionate monitoring regimes and provide advice to the project team and contractor on micro-siting routes within agreed limits of deviation, where necessary securing modifications to statutory consents. You will develop and maintain mutually beneficial external stakeholder relationships with consenting bodies, statutory authorities, key consultees, and government departments. Senior Managers will be responsible for managing a small team of Consent & Environment Mangers (and assistants) for a portfolio of projects.

You have

  • Strong knowledge of the Scottish planning process, consenting regimes, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation, with experience in the Scottish rural environment.
  • Proven project management skills in overseeing consenting and environmental compliance for major projects, including project definition and setup, external consultant management, cost management, project risk, quality assurance, and programme management.
  • A degree in Environmental or Planning disciplines, ideally with a postgraduate qualification, and experience in a relevant industry (e.g., infrastructure, environmental planning, statutory bodies, or consultancy). Membership with a relevant professional body is desirable.
  • Experience with infrastructure construction processes, including ground investigation, earthworks, drainage, and access works.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach, embracing challenges and opportunities within a changing environment.
