Overview

Battery Trader role based in Edinburgh or Perth.

Base location requires spending 50% of the working week in the designated office.

Salary £44,000 - £77,400 plus a performance-related bonus and a range of benefits supporting finances, wellbeing and family.

Working hours are 07:00-19:00, including a 1 in 3 weekend rotation with enhanced payment.

Responsibilities

  • Optimise SSE\'s battery assets by managing short-term dispatch, scheduling and trading activity across a growing BESS portfolio, with a strong emphasis on operational safety, compliance and risk management.
  • Identify and capture market opportunities by analysing wholesale power prices, ancillary service markets, asset availability and operational constraints to maximise commercial returns.
  • Execute trading strategies across short-term power markets, balancing mechanisms and ancillary services, making clear and informed decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, contribute to transparent reporting and support the delivery of commercial, operational and financial objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across trading, operations, analytics and technology teams to continuously improve systems, processes and optimisation capabilities.

Requirements

  • Experience in a commercial, trading or analytical role, ideally within energy, commodities, asset optimisation or another dynamic market environment.
  • A genuine interest in energy markets and the transition to a low-carbon future; knowledge of GB or European power markets would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and use insights to support effective decision-making.
  • The confidence to make sound judgements under pressure while maintaining a safety-conscious and risk-aware approach.
  • A collaborative and proactive mindset, with a passion for continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and working as part of an inclusive, supportive team.
