Contract Length: 3 Months - possible extension

Location: London - onsite

Salary: £22.79 per hour

Hours: 8am - 6pm

  • Lead on the management of hazardous waste disposal via waste procedures; ensuring that materials from the laboratories within the Chemical Engineering Department are correctly and safely disposed of.
  • Arrange a chemical waste collection to remove unsorted/legacy chemicals from waste cabinet and labs.
  • Work with EIL, Department Management and Safety teams to enforce and monitor safety procedures in the labs.
  • Act as a Deputy Departmental Safety Officer, conducting duties as required to ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and legislation.
  • Assist safety manager with regular lab checks to monitor compliance with departmental procedures, our clients' policies and H&S legal requirements.
  • Help Researchers and Tech Staff in the department with the writing of risk and COSHH assessments for equipment and experiments.
  • Advise and assist with safe storage of chemicals and other hazardous substances in the department labs.
  • Procure required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the laboratories and ensure it is being used where appropriate and is used correctly.
  • Be responsible for overseeing fire and health and safety regulations and to be trained as a Fire Evacuation Marshal and as a First Aider.
  • Arrange fire safety tours for new starters and as a refresher for existing staff (Bloomsbury).
  • Check department's first aid kits - restock where necessary (Bloomsbury).
  • Department AED monthly check.
  • Fire extinguisher and fire door checks.
  • Provide safety advice and guidance to departmental staff and students, researchers from other departments.
  • Review Department’s general/generic RAs.
  • Act as an appointed person for Controlled Materials, Flammable Gases, Offsite work coordination, and be responsible for the update and maintenance of safety signage.
