Senior Scientist in Cambridge

Cambridge Full-Time On-site
S

Contract: 12 Month Fixed-term, with potential extension

SRG are working with a leading cancer diagnostics organisation to recruit a Scientist II, Advanced Research to join a small early research team in Cambridge.

The successful candidate will help develop next generation technologies for the detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) in cancer patients using circulating tumour DNA. The primary objective is to advance a novel MRD detection method from early research through optimisation to a clear assessment of technical viability. This is a hands‑on laboratory role, working closely with computational colleagues to translate method requirements into analytical specifications and jointly troubleshoot any discrepancies between wet lab and computational results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refine and execute a programme of research and optimisation experiments for a novel cell‑free DNA MRD detection method.
  • Independently perform complex and novel library preparation and next generation sequencing workflows.
  • Carry out supporting work such as blood processing and cfDNA extractions.
  • Diagnose and resolve experimental problems, distinguishing true method limitations from technical artefact, contamination or workflow error, and elevate appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Analyse and interpret sequencing data in collaboration with computational colleagues, helping to define analytical requirements for the method.
  • Maintain complete, accurate and contemporaneous experimental records to a standard suitable for regulatory and patent purposes.

Key Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Life, Physical or Computer Science (PhD strongly preferred).
  • At least two years’ applied experience with molecular (NGS) platforms and assay development.
  • Hands‑on NGS library preparation experience.
  • Strong practical laboratory skills, particularly in NGS library construction and quantitative molecular biology.
  • Working knowledge of cancer biology and cancer genomics.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex experimental systems and identify the likely source of an unexpected result.
  • Cell-free DNA, low input library preparation, UMI sequencing or other error suppression approaches.
  • Cancer diagnostics, liquid biopsy or ctDNA analysis.
